Apple Announces the Best Apps, Games, Movies of 2018

Just a day after Google, Apple is announcing the best apps, games, movies, and other App Store content for this year. Here’s a quick breakdown.

Apple says self-care apps and battle royale games were the highlights of this year. Procreate Pocket, an app that lets you sketch was the best app of the year on the iPhone. Froggipedia, an ARKit education-focused app was the best iPad app of the year. On the iPhone, Donut Country was the best game and Gorgoa was the be game on the iPad.

And on the Mac, a $30 photo editing tool, Pixelmator Pro was the best app, with The Gardens Between winning the best game of the year on the Mac. For the Apple TV, Sweat won the best app of the year and Alto’s Odyessy won the best game of the year.

In terms of the charts, YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat were the top apps on the store this year. Fortnite, Helix Jump and Rise Up were the top games of the year on the App Store, followed closely by PUBG Mobile, which won the best game of the year on Android.

And for the entertainment buff — Drake was the artist of the year, with Juice WRLD being the breakout artist of the year. Cardi B’s I Like It won the best song of the year, and Kacey Musgraves’ Golden Hour was apparently the best album of the year.

For movies, Annihilation, Black Panther, and Crazy Rich Asians were the top best movies of the year. And on the TV, The Americans, Atlanta, and Barry were the top best TV shows of the year. Content that’s not available on the Apple TV and iTunes aren’t included here, of course.

And that’s really about it, to be honest. The best album of the year winner definitely caught me off-guard, and I feel like there are much better apps on the iOS App Store than Procreate Pocket and Froggipedia, but Apple is clearly trying to show off apps that utilize the latest tech like ARKit.

You can find the full list of the winners, including the links to them on here.

Nice to hear an album recognized that isn't an auto-tuned colloquialism repeated ad nauseam. Imagine that, a singer singing with a real guitar and drums backing her up.
