Apple Music Finally Launches on the Web

Apple is finally bringing Apple Music to the web. The company is today launching a beta of the new Apple Music web app, and anyone with an Apple Music subscription can use the streaming service on their desktop browser now.

The new Apple Music web app means you no longer need to use Apple’s iTunes app for Windows, and you can simply use the web app to play music on the service.

Apple Music’s web app is launching as a public beta, and it includes all of the basic features. So you can search for songs, playlists, etc., access your For You playlist, Browse, and Radio. You can even preview songs on the web app if you don’t have an Apple Music subscription. Apple even includes an “Install Apple Music” link that opens iTunes/Apple Music app depending on the OS you are running. Another cool feature is the fact that the website automatically switches between a dark and light theme depending on your browser’s theme settings.

This is obviously just a beta for now, so there might be some rough spots. You can’t yet sign-up for a new Apple Music subscription through the website, but that’s expected to come later on.

Anyway, this has been a long time coming for Apple. Spotify has had a web app for years, and so did other services like Google Play Music, Amazon Prime Music, and YouTube Music, so Apple is playing catch-up here.

This is expected. Apple Music on Mac is built with web tech anyway.

This will solve the Apple Music app on Windows problem and make it very close to Spotify…just need to improve on the music recommendations. Release Radar is still really good on Spotify

In reply to will:

I used to really like Release Radar but I find that these days it's more populated with remixes, remakes, collabs, etc. and I am using it less.

Maybe I am not listening to enough new music.

The new Family Mix feature is interesting – a playlist made up from aggregate family preferences. Drake and Barry Manilow are a great combination.

Great to see this. My kids have been asking for Apple Music instead of Spotify. Might have to reconsider with this addition.

iTunes is dead man walking…. this isn’t about catching up to Spotify but more or less planning the transition away from iTunes.

Seems to work just fine, I am liking it after a couple hours of noodling around listening to various recommendations and music I have stored in iCloud. No Beats1 radio but I don't listen to rap music in the first place, so that is definitely no big deal.

I don't think it's just a case of Apple wanting to play catch-up; perhaps they want to deprecate iTunes on Windows.

Of course you can't sign up for a subscription on the website. Apple only gets their 30% cut if you sign up from through the mobile app. ;)

Apple is in desperation to save Apple music.
