Apple Fixes Problematic Background Refresh Bug on iOS

Apple released iOS 13.2.2 on Tuesday, and it’s all about minor fixes. Apple hasn’t had much luck with the stability of iOS 13, and it’s been flooded with major bugs and performance issues, forcing Apple to quickly release a number of updates to the OS.

And that’s exactly what’s happening with iOS 13.2.2. When Apple released iOS 13.2, users started reporting about apps running in the background to unexpectedly quit. That means background apps were refreshing more than usual, and iOS had to reload them when users went back to those apps. That wasn’t the case before, and it’s obviously been caused by a bug introduced in iOS 13.2.

With the release of iOS 13.2.2, Apple is fixing that issue, along with some other problems. Apple says iOS 13.2.2 has fixed “an issue that could cause apps to quit unexpectedly when running in the background”. The same fix is available for iPadOS 13.2.2.

Here’s the full changelog for iOS 13.2.2:

  • Fixes an issue that could cause apps to quit unexpectedly when running in the background
  • Resolves an issue where iPhone may temporarily lose cellular service after a call
  • Addresses an issue where cellular data may temporarily not be available
  • Fixes an issue that caused replies to S/MIME encrypted email messages between Exchange accounts to be unreadable
  • Addresses an issue where using Kerberos single sign-on service in Safari may present an authentication prompt
  • Resolves an issue where charging may be interrupted on YubiKey Lightning-powered accessories

Apple has already started testing the first developer beta of iOS 13.3 with developers yesterday, adding the ability to disable Animoji/Memoji stickers within the native keyboard. The company continues to be under pressure to fix other issues on iOS 13, and it’s safe to say the quality of iOS has decreased significantly since iOS 12, and the iOS 13 release has been almost identical to the problematic iOS 11 rollout.

<p>Every fall there are complaints about bugs in the initial versions of Apple’s annual OS releases. I’ve never really had a problem until now. This is the first year I actually wish I hadn’t upgraded. </p><p><br></p><p>Unfortunately, I need iOS 13.2 to use the otherwise stellar iPhone 11 Pro. And I’m already on Catalina, not sure if it’s worth the effort to wipe and start over with Mojave. Hopefully updates in the next few months will clean up these issues. </p><p><br></p>

<p>"<span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Fixes an issue that could cause apps to quit unexpectedly when running in the background"</span></p><p><br></p><p>This has been happening forever especially if something is downloading in the background. Ive had bluetooth file transfers stop, browser file download stop, offline music downloads stop. It would even happen if the app was in the foreground but the screen timed out. Along with the lack of file system, this background downloading issue is why I dont own an Iphone anymore and i have never understood how more people havent complained about this over the years. </p>
