iPad Pro’s New Magic Keyboard Now Available Earlier Than Expected

Apple introduced the new iPad Pro last month along with a new Magic Keyboard for the device. At the time, the company said the new Magic Keyboard will be available in May.

However, the new keyboard is now being made available earlier than expected. Apple today made the Magic Keyboard available for order, with shipments starting next week.

For those who are unaware, the new Magic Keyboard is not cheap at all. The accessor costs $299 for the 11-inch iPad Pro and $349 for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro. That’s only $50 less than the new iPhone SE, by the way.

Apple’s new Magic Keyboard includes a built-in trackpad, which is the main new feature of the keyboard. With iPadOS now having built-in support for trackpads, this new trackpad will come in handy on the Magic Keyboard.

There’s also a really cool floating design on the keyboard. “Magic Keyboard attaches magnetically to iPad Pro, putting the beautiful Multi-Touch screen up on display with a floating cantilevered design for smooth adjustments of the viewing angle up to 130 degrees,” says Apple. You can see it in action below:

The full-size keyboard includes backlit keys and a scissor mechanism with 1mm key travel.

I have an older iPad Pro 10.5-inch, model MQDW2ZP/A. Will the magic keyboard work with that?

I am interested to see your take on this Paul regarding usability and what this may mean for the Surface.

In reply to jaredthegeek:

For power users, Surface is still better. But for productivity and basic usage, it is a real (although expensive) threat to laptops in general. More and more apps are coming to the IOS platform.

In reply to simont:

I agree – I think the real threat is that for basic productivity the iOS apps are simpler, nicer-looking, and better at the basics, as well as being optimized for the tablet form factor.

I mean, I use my desktop Windows PC on a regular basis and find myself wishing it could run certain iOS apps where the desktop equivalents are just kind of dated and over-complicated. I do less with my laptop, and I always travel with an iPad and a laptop – so while I'd have concerns about lappability it's a short leap to replace my laptop with an iPad Pro and keyboard.

I am very interested in some form of iPad plus some form of keyboard/trackpad/cover. And I’m willing to pay for that to see what it’s like. But I can’t buy this thing. It looks horribly non-ergonomic, with a too-short wrist rest. I see that Logitech just announced something for the normal iPad and iPad Air. I’d go with something like that for the iPad Pro perhaps.

I pre-ordered this on Amazon in early April. Do you think it will ship faster from Amazon or through Apple?

The one piece of information I have been looking for is: how much does this weigh?

I still can't find it, even though it's now available. Does anyone know?

I should have known to be expecting a Mac vs. PC ad again…lol Just dislike how it mischaracterizes the PC as something you can't do these things with while proclaiming it is a "computer" even if only as a replacement. At the same time trying to figure out what phone OS to go with for the future. I really do wish there was a "new Edge" type option. The goodness of compatibility and a diverse ecosystem while not sending my entire life to any advertising company (based on revenue).

They should build an infinitey adjustable kickstand in the back of the device then connect the keyboard to a magnetic connector on the bottom.

It's intriguing, and I pre-ordered one but then canceled it. I want to see some reviews and maybe iPadOS 14, where I hope we'll see even more effort toward making the iPad a laptop replacement, before committing so much money to an iPad Pro and Magic (eyeroll) keyboard.
