Opera 57 Arrives with Start Page Improvements

The latest desktop version of the Opera web browser is here, adding a smarter news recommendation engine with an integrated Netflix recommendations section to its start page.
“The new version of the Opera browser makes it easier for you to stay informed on the latest news and enthralled by the latest Netflix series,” Opera’s Robert Tomaszewski explains. “Also, like and dislike buttons are on every news article for you to click on, helping Opera’s AI recommendation engine to deliver more interesting news to your start page.”

Here’s what’s new.
News recommendation improvements. The News section of Opera 57’s start page has been enhanced with AI-driven personalized news recommendations. This system is opt-in, and you can select the news topics that interest you. As you use this feature, you can like or dislike articles to “nudge the AI mechanism” and better personalize the experience, Opera says.
Netflix recommendations. In an interesting bit of cross-production functionality, Opera users with Netflix accounts in select countries will be able to get Netflix recommendations right in the News section of the browser’s start page. You can add movies and TV shows to your queue from there, and they’ll appear in Netflix the next time you access the service on whatever device. This feature is available now in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Czechia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. And Opera says it will add more locations soon.
UI touch-ups. Opera 57 features a more compact styling for its Settings page, an improved page-opening mechanism to avoid flashbang impressions, and the ability to close pinned tabs without having to unpin them first. And some bug fixes, of course.
