Grammarly Picks Up More AI Smarts

Grammarly has updated its popular online grammar checker to better showcase its AI-powered writing suggestions for correctness, clarity, engagement, and delivery.

“Grammarly knows there’s more to good written communication than proper spelling and grammar — to communicate effectively, your writing also needs to be clear, engaging, and thoughtful,” a Grammarly representative told me. “With this update, Grammarly users will be able to do just that.”

The Grammarly Editor—which is available at app.grammarly.com as well as via various web browser extensions—has been updated to provide writing feedback in four categories, each of which corresponds to a specific underline color when it finds issues.

“Red underlines correspond to suggestions about spelling, punctuation, and grammar,” Grammarly explains. “Blue underlines signify potential clarity and conciseness improvements. Green underlines mark suggestions to make your writing more engaging. And purple underlines indicate suggestions that help you strike the right balance of politeness, formality, and friendliness.”

Additionally, you can now tell Grammarly what your goals are for a particular document so that it can adjust its suggestions accordingly.
