Apple Launches Apple One

As expected, Apple today announced the bundling of its existing services into Apple One, which will be available in three tiers.

First up is the Individual plan, which costs $14.95 per month and offers 50 GB of iCloud storage, Apple Music, Apple TV+, and Apple Arcade.

There’s also a Family plan for $19.95 per month with the same services access but 200 GB of iCloud storage.

Finally, there’s a Premier plan where available for $29.95. It offers 2 TB of iCloud storage, Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, Apple News+, and Apple Fitness+.

Apple One will be available “this fall,” Apple says.

They need to have something that builds on Apple News+. I don't want music or gaming.

In reply to mebby:

I think this is more about building Apple Music numbers more than anything. We have Spotify at home and really like it. Tried Apple Music, but Spotify just does better for us for music suggestions…like black magic type better lol.

But I agree, I would liked to have seen News+ bundled with more vs Music.

In reply to will:

Agree – the value isn't there with any of these plans unless you are willing to take Apple Music. Outside of the PC, I am all Apple, and I currently have Apple TV+ and News+ but there's no way I'm switching to Apple Music because I hate iTunes and have investments in Spotify Connect / Chromecast things that work as first-class citizens with Spotify.

Also, bundling them up makes it more tedious to do time-limited subscriptions like I am more likely to do with News+ and TV+, which I guess is the point.

I was hoping to be able to build my own setup for 9.99 a month-fat chance. These tiers really force you into the Family Plan if there's more than one person in the house. Kinda reminds me of my cable bill the way it's structured.

We're currently paying $15 for Apple Music family and $3 for 200GB iCloud storage, so for $1 extra I can get Apple Arcade for the kids. That works for me right now.

Looking ahead, we're at about 90% capacity on iCloud so we may move to the 2TB tier, which is $10; add that to Apple Music family and we'd be at $25 per month. At that point the $30 premier plan wouldn't look too bad since it would be an incremental $5 for Arcade and News.

I'd love some more details here. How much storage in each tier? How many family members? What does the Fitness+ service offer?

I'm a Spotify, OneDrive and Strava user. I'm not giving up OneDrive but iCloud in addition would be nice for Live Photos and I already pay $1 per month for enough iCloud storage to back up my phone's apps and settings (I exceeded the free amount in the first month of owning an iPhone).

Strava is something I love and appreciate, but they recently raised prices. I'd be open to a competitor if the service was good enough. The biggest challenge a fitness service will have is the social aspect. Everyone I know who does any kind of competitive activity is on Strava. I doubt they will all switch en masse.

Finally, Spotify is likely the easiest to switch from, however I like that I have Spotify on my Sonos, my XBOX, my Windows PCs and my Apple Devices. I doubt Apple Music is coming to XBOX or Windows any time soon.

If the feature sets are right, the storage sizes are right and the family member count matches what I get with Spotify Premium for Family, there could be a cost savings there. So that's potentially interesting, if I'm willing to give up some of what I enjoy about the individual services. I need to learn more about the details.

There’s a nice Apple Music web app that works on Windows too.

The only two things I pay for is iCloud storage $2.99 and Apple News Plus. There's nothing for me here. I use Amazon Music Unlimited HD or Tidal for my music, and whatever comes with Comcast is good enough for TV for me. I'll never use Apple Music as long as they don't offer a lossless quality option. Oh and I pay for Youtube Premium for no Youtube adds so have access to that too. I really don't need any more music streaming services… I'm not a gamer… Give me add free news. please! Its the one service I want from apple more than any other. Add free news. and yes I'd pay for that. They offer nothing for people who want news options.

But wait, I thought that all offered services had to be listed individually and sold separately? Oh wait I forgot that was just for game streaming.

With Microsoft out of the consumer space these plans will work for some people. Years ago I stopped subscribing to Xbox Music/Groove because my wife also wanted a music service and it made sense to look for services with a family plan. Many users begged Microsoft for family plan but it didn't arrive. I went to Spotify. If you go into the Apple ecosystem and have family members in the same place then these plans could make a lot of sense for consumers.

In the same way that my Microsoft 365 Home subscription gives me 6 installs of Office and cloud storage a family with Apple devices may well find value here. It's a consumer bundle that makes sense in the Apple ecosystem. Any family that wants Apple Music will find the rest an extra. It might even tempt some Spotify users.

It won't suit everyone but subscriptions and ecosystems work.

In reply to ponsaelius:

One of the things I like for apple music family sub is that your family gets 6 simultaneous playbacks. so if you are 2 persons in the family unit like I am each user can play back music on multiple units without having it stop on the others like it does in Spotify.

In reply to ivarh:

In spotify, each user gets its own playback too, so for 2 users, if you use 2 playback devices, those will play independently too. You just have to use 2 different logons for those 2 devices, of course…

I was hoping it would be more flexible so I could choose the ones I use most. I feel that they're using this to pump up numbers on services that are not performing well.

Apple One Premier is a great value especially considering that you can share with up to five family members.

Typical marketing. Apple releases 3 products called "One"… One implies, you know, that there is just ONE of them.

I think it is a good move, but poor naming, as there is more than one One…

In reply to wright_is:

It is One from the point of view of the customer, who only has to buy One. That is key to Apple, thinking from the point of view of the customer. So, good naming, I think.

If I could have had Apple News+ instead of Apple Arcade on the family plan I'd have bought it.

I think this is going to take some spreadsheet work to decide if it is worthwhile for any particular situation, just like cell plans. For me, my family, Premier would save us 2 cents on what we are paying for right now. That would even be worth it to cut the number of subscriptions to One (see the naming). Wife is super interested in the upcoming Fitness +, so in essence we'd get that for free. Doing so would get News+ and Arcade, two things we don't really care about for free as well. I tried News+ and wasn't impressed, but for 'free', I'd use it. Gotta do the math.
