Microsoft Announces Big Updates for Edge Collections

Microsoft has just announced upcoming updates for the Collections feature in its Edge browser, which lets users curate content across the Internet. Collections is one of Edge’s few distinctive features and it’s a nice complement to traditional bookmarks.

“There are so many reasons to love Collections in Microsoft Edge and we hear it all the time through feedback. It’s a handy tool that helps you collect and organize content you find across the web while keeping all your ideas organized neatly into folders,” said Liat Ben-Zur, Corporate Vice President at Microsoft

Edge users can now add web images and videos to their Collections, and it works by hovering over content or doing a right-click on images or videos on a webpage. For images, Visual Search from Microsoft Bing can also help users search for similar items by hovering over an image and clicking on the Visual Search icon in the top right corner.

Microsoft is also adding a new inspiration feed to the Edge Collections window, which will display content related to items users add to a collection. “Coming soon, you will also be able to share your collections with others so you can collaborate and brainstorm together, whether it be planning that next vacation or remodeling your home office,” Ben-Zur also said today.

In addition to these updates for Edge collections, Microsoft has also started to roll out the ability to follow content creators directly in Microsoft Edge. The feature is currently restricted to some websites including YouTube, TikTok, and Bilibili, but more sites will be added in the future.

When you’re signed in with your Microsoft account in Edge, a Follow button will appear in the Edge bar when you’re visiting supported websites. You’ll be able to find everyone you’ve followed in the Collections menu, where the Follow tab will display the latest updates from your favorite content creators.

“If you have existing Collections, these updates will be rolling out to you over the next few months, so look out for an update prompt within your Collections pane. Once you click update, you’ll immediately be able to enjoy all of these great upgrades,” Ben-Zur explained today.

NTLite will probably let you configure this too… but I’m not sure you’re commenting on the right article, here… this one is about Edge, not that topic

I sincerely hope the inspiration feed can be disabled. My collections are what they are for a reason; the last thing I want is for it to be polluted with suggestions that aren’t nearly as relevant as Microsoft thinks they are. Their track record with this as seen in the new tab news feed and Windows 11 news widgets is already pretty poor, so I don’t have high hopes that the inspiration feed will be any good at all.

Personally, Collections is one of those features I don’t use, and can’t see much of a point in… just like the "Math Solver" (which surely should get added into the Calculator app) or "Cite this" (which could just get added into Microsoft Word).

Edge is so-bloated at the moment in both the main application menu ("…"), and the right-click menu, with pointless options I’ll never use. I mean, look at the right-click menu currently: how-many of their users do they think are web-developers and so need "View page source" and "Inspect" to be there?

While I still like Edge overall, it does remind me of how the once slim MSN Messenger over-time turned-into the Windows Live Messenger, which became more-bloated with features that weren’t really needed.

Is Edge Collections becoming more like OneNote? I have been traveling for almost a year now and using Edge Collection has been great. Previous to that I was using OneNote to collect info on places by country/city.

The big downside to Edge Collection is that there is no easy way to integrate with Teams, that I know.
