OneNote for Windows 10 Updated with Section Passwords, Notebook Reordering, More

OneNote for Windows 10 received a fairly major update today with several new features, including section password support, notebook reordering, and more.

I found out about this update from Microsoft’s William Devereux on Twitter. But you can find out more here as well.

New features in this release—which, to be clear, applies to the mobile version of OneNote that Microsoft bundles with Windows 10 and not OneNote 2016—include the following:

Notebook reordering. Now, you can sort your notebooks as you can in OneNote 2016. Just select the notebook in the Notebooks view (open the hamburger menu) and drag it.

Add a password to a section. Now, you can add a password to a section from OneNote for Windows 10.

Create diagrams or flow charts. A new Shapes gallery, available in the Draw tab, lets you insert circles, squares, arrows and other shapes.

Save images and files to your PC. Now, you can save images and other files from OneNote to your PC: Just right-click it and choose Save As from the pop-up menu.

New page placement. Now, you can add a new page above the selected page instead of at the bottom of the page list as usual. To do so, right-click the current page tab and choose New Page from the pop-up menu.

Change the layer order. Now, tables, note containers, pictures, and shapes can be re-ordered as layers so that you can choose which are in front and which are behind. To do so, select one of these items and then choose Order from the pop-up menu, and then Bring Forward, Bring to Front, Send Backward, or Send to Back.

Paragraph handles. This one I haven’t figured out, but Microsoft says you can “grab the paragraph handles and reorder or collapse text on the page.”

New bullet styles. In addition to traditional bullets, OneNote for Windows 10 now supports dashes, arrows, diamonds, and other new bullet types.

You can tell you have the new version by checking Windows Store or, in OneNote, Help > About. The version should be 17.7870.5762.1.0 or higher.

I love the fact that OneNote is so readily available across platforms. It was what was needed to move me off of Evernote a few years ago. I'm glad to see them continuing to upgrade the UWP app. However, if one is using Office 2016 is there any benefit to using the Windows store app?

In reply to Simard57: Yea, 2016 had them for a while, and then you could open a protected section in OneNote UWP (for a while you couldn't), and now you can secure a section as well.

In reply to Simard57:

Office 2016 (at least the current (via Office 365) version 1612 (Build 7668.2074)) does already do section pass word protection.

Also, my older store OneNote 17.7766.57951.0 detects password protected sections and successfully asks for the password (which I just now applied with the above Office 365 OneNote version). I can't test the boxed OneNote 2016.

Added in edit: The store just provided me with 17.7870.57621.0, and indeed it can now add a password to a section.

One reason I moved over to iOS is because it supported PW sections before the Windows Metro/Modern/Neon version, and also has a list view made easier for checking off your shopping lists and to-do lists. Did the Windows variant ever get this? It is so handy.

We need to start calling this OneNote shallow end of the pool edition or short bus edition….

It's about time they incorporated the "Save as" feature. It was insane that on my SP4 if I took a screen shot by double clicking the pen, it opened the image in OneNote but to save the image to my computer I had to then open OneNote 2016 to get a "Save as" option.

What drives me nuts is that MS has two products with the same name – and functionality in both that I want. I research so much, and save that research in OneNote, but can't use OneNote 2016 as easily as Windows 10 OneNote. If they have to have two products, it would be nice to at least allow a sync between the two! Who does this? Have one product, with premium features upgrade. Only MS can think and get away with this for such a great product that.

In reply to codputer: Not getting your issue. The notebooks are compatible across the two products, the UWP app here and OneNote 2016. There are currently more features in the 2016 x86 application, but you don't loose anything opening the same .one file in the UWP/Mobile app. This not much different than Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and the respective UWP/Mobile versions. The files produced are the same and compatible. It should be clear that the features of UWP OneNote are moving forward towards feature parity with the legacy desktop version. I use them both with the same 'notebooks' saved in OneDrive, 2016 on my desktop and the UWP one on my tablet (Surface 3).

Great stuff. Use OneNote quite frequently and love synchronization between devices and cloud.

BTW is Evernote still alive?
