Microsoft is Testing Gmail Integration in Outlook.com

A user on Twitter has stumbled onto a new and as-yet-unannounced feature for Outlook.com: The ability to add a Gmail account and access it separately from the Outlook.com and without importing messages.

“You can now add your Gmail account on Outlook.com!” Florian B tweeted, along with the screenshot displayed above.

He reports that the integration works as it does in Outlook Mobile, with separate inboxes for each account (one each for Outlook.com and Gmail). It also integrates with Google Drive, he says.

So this is good news: I’ve been wondering when Microsoft would turn Outlook.com into a real web app that can replace its desktop applications, and this is a great first step. Next up, of course, is offline access. And at that point, Microsoft can EOL the terrible Mail app in Windows 10 and replace it with an Outlook.com PWA.

I love it when a plan comes together.

In reply to AnOldAmigaUser:

^^^This^^^ I have a personal domain address with outlook.com hosted email (leftover from the Windows Live Domain days) and a gmail address. The minute I can see all three, the desktop apps go bye-bye.

Nice. Maybe the day they kill those horrible W10 apps and replace it with a PWA.

The webmail already looks better and has a few cool features those horrid apps lack like OneDrive integration, save to OneNote etc

The Win10 Mail app really is an embarrassment, especially if that was the 'upgrade' you went to from Windows Live Mail, which was reasonably full-featured for a desktop app. It would randomly quit on me with no error message, refuse to see my printer when every other app would, and intermittently fail to sync. The experience soured me so much that I gave up on it entirely and went to regular web-based Gmail and never looked back.

It's worth mentioning that this will only be for premium accounts. On the announcements tab in my Outlook.com it shows "Premium Only" for this integration.

I got that notice a couple of days ago and just thought it was something I missed in the news cycle. I never get the new features early. Go figure.

Here's hoping that the People hub can work with gmail contacts. I'm not a fan of Google having all of my contacts. If integration means they don't have direct access then I guess I will keep all my contacts stored to outlook.

Tried this today, worked very well. Responsive, message load-in time was quick. Have no interest in using it routinely since I just forward all my messages from Gmail to my Outlook address, but it's very encouraging to see this happen for everyone that needs to keep things separate.
