PayPal Comes to the New Skype

Microsoft announced today that it is bringing PayPal to the mobile Skype apps, allowing users to transfer funds to each other seamlessly.

“At Skype, we work to make your life easier and more efficient,” a post credited to the Skype Team reads. “That’s why we developed Send Money, a Skype feature that allows you to transfer funds via the latest Skype mobile app while you’re in the middle of a conversation using PayPal.”

This new Send Money feature requires the new Skype clients, which for now means Android and iOS only. (Something tells me that Microsoft has adjusted its time table for bringing the client tech to Windows 10 based on negative feedback.)

Here’s how it works.

While chatting with family or friends via Skype, you can swipe right from the conversation view and tap Send Money. The first time you do so, you will need to confirm your location—this feature is available in over 20 locations at launch—and then link your PayPal account.

“Whether it’s to send money to your daughter studying abroad, reimburse a friend for grabbing milk at the store, or one of a million other reasons you might need to transfer cash, Send Money makes it easy and efficient,” Microsoft says.

And I gotta agree: This seems like a great idea.

Also, a side note: Since this feature is called Send Money and not “Pay with PayPal” or whatever, I assume Microsoft is at least open to adding other money transfer services in the future. Just a thought.

In reply to JudaZuk:

I've never used PayPal. In the it press (c't magazine, PC Bild etc. and mainstream press) it has a very bad reputation with people being scammed on eBay and PayPal not giving the money back to those being scammed, or sellers having their money taken away and given back to a scammer. It is often only after the press get involved (c't magazine has on many occassions gotten involved in incidents with buyers and sellers who have been scammed and eBay and PayPal have told them the issue is closed and they weren't scammed (either products were never delivered, but PayPal let the seller keep the money or sellers didn't get the money, because the scammer claimed they didn't get the goods – it is wierd, whether you are a buyer or seller, the scammer on the other side always seems to be in the right), yet after the magazine gets involved, suddenly they acknowledge that there was something fishy and agree to reinstate the money).

In reply to david.thunderbird:

I don't know how it is in the US, but over here PayPal has a reputation as the refuge of scammers, it seems that they can get away with murder and ScamPal doesn't do anything to protect the honest customer. They crop up in reports on aggrieved customers in the press of a very regular basis.

Yey – yet another payment solution. Here in Sweden we have one solution (Swish) that is pretty ubiquitous covering (2015) 3,6 million users of Sweden's 10 million total population.

I do fibe to ten Swish transactions a week and now even companies can sign up for it. Paypal I only use for online shopping and I think I have used it once for peer-to-peer transfers

In reply to matsan:

+1 for Swish.

Also; companies have been using it for years. The hot dog stand at the corner won't accept cash, but have an iZettle for credit cards or Swish as an alternative.

One advantage with Swish is that the money are immediately (as in instantly) transferred to the account you set up. So it's right there at your disposal to spend. Great whey you're out with friends for dinner. First there's the fight who's going to pay the bill (using a credit card and getting lots of points) and then there's the Swishing of money to whomever got the bill. Sweden is practically a cashless society. There's almost never a reason to have cash.

Update:

Just read on the Swish page that there's now 5.5M users. I think that matsan may have been referring to retail stores, which now also accept Swish, not only the hot dog stand at the corner or the person selling ear-plugs at the concert. This is escalating quickly.

The Swish site is only in Swedish, but still go and check it out: https://www.getswish.se/</p>

I don't know anyone who uses PayPal, but that is irrelevant anyway, I don't have a PayPal account either.

In reply to wright_is:

I don't know how I'd live without PayPal, its how I get paid from my game testing job, its how I get donations when I stream on Mixer and its how I pay for most online stuff, like games from Xbox. My bank account sees less use then my PayPal. Its a similar situation for most of my friends as well, sad thing is that none of them use Skype because they use Discord.

I guess Skype is trying to capture the Snapchat crowd with their new direction but I don't know why anyone would switch to Skype from whatever they use now like Discord or FB Messenger.

I would ask if PayPal charges a fee for the transfer and while it's nice to send money to somebody through paypal, they can only use that money immediately FROM paypal. If they're standing in a store or needing to pay a utility that's about to be shut-off, will they have to wait several days for the money to transfer to their bank?

That's certainly one way to get the college crowd if the Snapchattiness doesn't! ?
