Microsoft’s Working to Bring Back the ‘Compact View’ to Modern Skype

With all the updates over the years for Skype, especially the transition to the Store, one feature that has been lost for most users is the ability to use a ‘compact’ view of Skype. For those that have been missing this view, there is good news on the horizon.

The Skype team is looking for feedback on three different ‘compact’ views of Skype and you can see them in the image at the top of this post. The tabbed, split, and hub views offer a different take on how to bring a compact view back to Skype and the team is looking for feedback about which way you prefer.

There is a survey that you can take here that shows the different options for the split view and how they function. There is nothing ground-breaking here but it’s good to see that this functionality will be coming back to the modern version of the application.

Further, it’s good to see that Microsoft is listening to feedback about how to implement this functionality rather than shoving an update out to everyone with blind eyes and ears. The last time the company did that, they overhauled the mobile apps to try and take on Snapchat and other social apps which ended in a spectacular failure.

There isn’t any indication on when compact view will return but it’s clear the Skype team is deep into the design process for the update which hopefully means we don’t have to wait too much longer.

I'm still seething over at the last crap date. So MS don't give me something else to seethe over.

Oh nice!! All three look very good, but I’m partial to the classic split mode personally and left my vote thusly.

As of right now, Skype 7 is still scheduled to fly off a cliff on Sep 1, but the Director of Design for Skype (and Outlook) on Twitter, @peterskillman, over the last week or so has made it clear that they've been seriously discussing pushing back the date until Skype 8 has some measure of feature parity with 7. It might not happen, in which case we can all draw our shades and huddle into the nearest corner, but it might. And one thing's for sure: they're listening to users now, big time.

Collected quotes:

www.reddit.com/r/skype/comments/8zryg0/the_director_of_design_for_skype_comments_on_the

Just watching windows pop up and whizz around made it hard for me to really see nuances. Tabbed seemed to afford the most options.

I've never understood the longing for tabs. I understand people like them, but I prefer the classic split-view with each conversation and the contacts list split into their own windows. Makes life so much easier.

In reply to Lewk:

Totally agree. I have a 200px wide contact list visible on the side of the screen at all times and conversation windows open as needed… If I could have that, with tabs, fine, give the option of tabs as well.

The important bit is the separate, narrow contacts windows.

I think the view it had before Microsoft acquired them would be a nice addition.

Split is great, tabbed could work, Hub is pathetic.

If tab works like split, but just with tabbed conversation windows, that would be the best option, but they only demoed it with a sodding great Hub windows, so I'm not 100% sure it would work "properly".

The window on the left of Split looks a lot like Skype for Business. Funny that.

I'm in a group that's been using Skype for the group chat for years. When they made it so the original desktop app no longer worked a month ago, we switched over to the free version of Slack. Good riddance to Skype. Slack works much better. Wish we had switched over sooner.

I wish they'd make a compact view for outlook.com. It wastes so much screen space I can only see 5-6 emails in the list (preview on the bottom). With real outlook, I can see 15-24 depending on window size and can easily highlight groups of them for filing.
