Skype Can Finally Record Your Calls

Skype is getting a much-requested feature today: call recording. After weeks of testing, Microsoft is rolling out Call Recording for Skype to all users across platforms.

Call recording has been a much-requested feature for Skype. For years, Skype users have been asking for a native functionality to record their calls instead of relying on third-party, sometimes expensive, apps and tools. With native call recording on Skype, things are getting a whole lot easier — all you need to do is hit the “Start Recording” button during a call.

From there, Skype will start recording your call and share it within the chat where it will last for 30 days. If you want to store it for longer, you can simply download and save the video locally. What’s even more helpful is Skype will automatically notify you and everyone else in the call when someone starts recording the call, and it’ll even record any shared screens which is going to be very convinient.

Microsoft says call recording on Skype is available on the latest versions of Skype — if you are running Skype 8, that is. The feature is available on “most platforms” except the Skype UWP app on Windows 10, though Microsoft says it will arrive for the UWP app in the “coming weeks.”

Call recording on Skype is launching at a critical point for the service — Microsoft got a lot of flack when the company announced it’s discontinuing the classic Skype, later backtracking. The company also announced some major design changes last week to help Skype 8 become more familiar to its classic users.

(xmasyes)

So glad to hear this. I'm a little saddened about the delayed rollout to the UWP version of Skype (in theory isn't it supposed to be the "default" version, now?), but hey — what else is new?

OK so Skype is prioritised to support the 'classic' version downloaded from skype.com on Windows and other platforms? UWP / Windows Store version don't get the update until later? Isn't that a bit weird? Shouldn't it be the other way around?

In reply to James_Wilson:

Like any developer, they are probably prioritising the versions having the largest installed base. Also, a "few weeks" delta: in the grand scheme of things, does this really matter?

Queue the conspiracy posts that the NSA or CIA will use this record ALL Skype calls (without you getting a notice) and store them with all the other crap they hoover-up around the net for later inspection…

Does it give the other party the opportunity to accept or refuse recording as required by law in some states such as California?

In reply to rbgaynor:

It does notify people, but I can't remember if it gives the option to refuse. Though you could just hang up the call.

It sounds like the recording is done in the cloud.

For podcasts a more interesting option would be to have each side record their end and offer to merge or download both sides individually.
