Microsoft Starts Testing New Outlook for Windows Experience

Microsoft’s starting to test a brand-new design for Outlook on Windows. The company first introduced the modern Outlook experience on the web, which is today coming to organizations as part of the new “Coming Soon” feature — a new opt-in toggle in Outlook that lets users within organizations get early access to the new Outlook experience on the web and Windows.

On Windows, a modern look for Outlook has been long overdue. With Office 2019 coming soon, Microsoft is giving a new look to Outlook, too. There’s a new, simplified ribbon that will be consistent across other Office apps. Microsoft has updated the iconography across Outlook to make the user-interface look much cleaner and modern. Outlook Calendar’s also getting a new look, with new intelligent highlights and visual changes that will apparently help you manage your time, events, and meetings much more effectively.

Microsoft already tested the majority of the new Outlook for Windows updates with Office Insiders, but the latest release is more focused at organizations using Office 365, especially with the new Coming Soon feature.

The cleaner user-interface does make look Outlook look a whole lot better, to be honest. The new iconography and the simplified ribbon looks really beautiful, and they also help users be more productive, according to Microsoft. The Outlook team discussed some of the subtle design changes here, so if you are interested to see how exactly things are changing, make sure to give it a quick read.  “The updates make reading, composing, and taking action in emails and meetings faster. A more responsive web development framework and a modern design lets you see, read and respond to emails and meeting invitations, and attach files quicker,” the Outlook team said.

Microsoft is going to start rolling out the upgraded Outlook for Windows experience to Office Insiders first (and organizations in Monthly Channel), while the new web experience is going to be available for organizations in Targeted Release starting today.

    <p>While I find these updates nice, I'd much rather they spent the resources doing under-the-hood work. So much of Outlook beyond the basic interface hasn't changed in years. And then there's the broken HTML rendering, which is my single biggest issue with Outlook. I still don't get why they don't just use EdgeHTML for rendering HTML.</p><p>Now, if they have improved performance, that would be great…</p>

      <blockquote><em><a href="#314376">In reply to arknu:</a></em></blockquote><p>Because before Office 365 had to run on Windows 7, 8, now that Office 2019 is Windows 10 exclusive, they can now start adding Windows 10 specific features and also start moving away from the Win32 app design. </p>

    <p>People complain that Microsoft should make there apps consistent and simple across the board. When they do, they complain that they should spend there time and resources elsewhere. Come on people make up your mines!!</p>

    <p>My first impression is fairly positive. This is not a disaster like the first stab at 3D Paint.</p><p>I do agree that all of Microsoft's apps should be brought up to date in regard to modern 64-bit.</p><p>It is important for Microsoft to drop support for obsolete technologies in Windows 10.</p><p><br></p>

    <p>I like it. Maybe Microsoft should replace Mail App with Outlook. Or at least a trim down version of Outlook.</p>

    <p>I wish they would also clarify the Outlook product line. I run so many versions of outlook I don't know which I use anymore with varying feature sets.</p>

      <blockquote>AS far as I know Office 2019, will bring Office 2016 up the same level as Office 365 as at its release date, since the new features come to office 365 only. </blockquote><blockquote>So yes, it will come to office 2019, but 365 users will have it first.</blockquote><blockquote><a href="#315699"><em>In reply to paragon:</em></a></blockquote><p><br></p>

    <p>I like and use Outlook (desktop) every single day at work as part of O365. It's rich in features and does a lot of good stuff. However overtime it has become heavy and slower than earlier versions before it.</p><p>Microsoft not only needs to add these tiny niceties but also work heavily on the performance for Outlook.</p><p>The Windows 10 Outlook UWP app is a non starter at business, in my opinion.</p>

    <p>I'm using the Office 2019 Preview but don't have this new "Outlook for Windows experience" yet even though I am on the latest version 1808 build released today 10730.20088.</p>

    <p>I recently switched back to Outlook after using another email client for years. I'll be switching back, however, as Outlook simply doesn't work. After a couple weeks it decided to stop receiving emails, and, typically, Microsoft solutions don't work.</p><p><a href="https://www.quickpayportal.pro/&quot; target="_blank">https://www.quickpayportal.pro/</a></p&gt;

    <p>Office 365 subscriber here. I've tried the "Coming Soon" feature in Outlook twice in the past three months. Back before Christmas I switched it on and Outlook started freezing up. I would have to shut it down with Task Manager. It finally dawned on me that "coming soon" might be responsible. I switched it off and everything starting working fine again. I tried it again earlier this week (after two Office 365 updates) and Outlook still locks up. Anyone having the same problem? I really like the simplified interface.</p>
