Twitter Officially Launches New Windows 10 App

Twitter is formally launching its new app for Windows 10 devices today. The company’s new Windows 10 app is built on its Twitter Lite Progressive Web App, with support for most of the native APIs in Windows 10.

Since the new Twitter experience is based on Twitter’s Lite web app (mobile.twitter.com), most of the “modern” Twitter features are here. This includes the 280 character limit for tweets, the revamped Explore tab that also displays tweets from your network and topics you may be interested in. The app also packs the bookmarking feature that lets you save tweets for later.

As for the native Windows 10 features, the new Twitter app works with support for the share sheet, jump lists, live tiles, and more. “This release represents a renewed commitment to Windows that has been long overdue and is part of a longer-term strategy to reach greater feature parity to all of our platforms,” Twitter said in a blog post. The company is working on bringing a night theme for the app in the future, too.

Twitter has been testing its new Windows 10 app with Insiders for a couple of weeks, but with the release of the Windows 10 April 2018 Update that brings support for PWAs, all users running the latest version of Windows 10 should be able to get the new app right away.

I already hate the new Twitter app. The main reason is that it sucks just as much as the website now. ALso no Dark Theme. Everything should have a Dark Theme in 2018. I wouldn't complain as much if I could go back to the previous version until this was fixed but that isn't an option either.

And it is amazingly horrible. Pretty much as lame as I expected. I'll continue to use Tweetium. PWA is simply a way for companies to be as lazy as they possibly can about getting an app presence out there. In most cases, their websites are just plain bad. I guess bringing their apps into parity with the poor quality of their websites lends to 'consistency'.

For me, Twitter is an app where Timeline could become useful. Be nice if via Timeline you could resume your Twitter app where you left off (ie. works like a service like Tweet marker)

got it on my 950XL today. My only complaint is that i can't pin lists any longer. Likely the same on my desktop, but not as big a deal since I use Mehedi's awesome app there.

Another fake "app" that's really just a web wrapper, to pad the failed windows 10 store.

If they're really "renewing their commitment to windows" then make something that works on Windows 7 and 8.1 as well – since they're still more than half the windows market and will be for many more years.

I'm really impressed they bothered to update the Windows 10 Mobile app as well. I'm actually a little surprised they could update the mobile app, since W10M doesn't actually support PWAs. I'm guessing they just packaged the mobile site in a minimal app wrapper, but it works fine. Since the limit was increased to 280 characters, I had stopped using the official app and just pinned the mobile website instead. While it worked alright, it wasn't ideal. This updated app gets me a lot closer to where I want to be.

Now if only Twitter would add support for the dark theme on mobile…

And still no multiple account support, so a step backwards. Why can't this be comparable to the mobile versions, which manage to be dramatically more feature-full?

In reply to TurboFool:

if you want multiple account support use Tweetdeck. The Twitter app isn't meant for power users

Am I the only one who actually likes the app? Twitter has never, and I mean NEVER, made a decent app for desktops (both mac and PC). Twitter dot com isn't an app, and Tweetdeck is overkill.

This PWA so much better than the native app, and in many ways it actually behaves like an app. It gives you all of the latest twitter features like the extended tweets and threads. All these people hating either don't use Twitter regularly or have forgot how bad Twitter's previous efforts have been.

This is overall a net win for Twitter users and Windows 10 – of note is how this thing isn't possible on OSX yet.

The app has already automatically replaced the native app in my Windows 10 Mobile phone, where PWA are not supported. Great.

Mehedi, I've heard that third party Twitter apps will stop working on June. As a twitter app developer, what do you know about this?
