Facebook Will Let Users Transfer Pictures Directly to Google Photos

In 2018, tech giants joined forces to launch a new initiative called the Data Transfer Project. It’s a new system designed to allow seamless data transfer across all the popular online platforms. Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and Twitter were the original members of the project, and Apple joined the project later this year.

The open-source Data Transfer Project has been under development for a while, and we are finally starting to see some actual products using the new system.

Facebook today announced that the company is releasing a new tool that will enable users to transfer photos and videos from Facebook directly to other services. The tool will initially only support Google Photos, and could even support other services like OneDrive in the future. “We want to build practical portability solutions people can trust and use effectively. To foster that trust, people and online services need clear rules about what kinds of data should be portable and who is responsible for protecting that data as it moves to different services,” the social network giant said.

Facebook’s new tool for transferring photos and videos to Google Photos will be available in the first half of 2020 to everyone worldwide. The tool will be first available to users in Ireland, and users can access the new tool from within their Your Facebook information section.

I have been a big fan of the Data Transfer Project since its original launch, and this new tool does sound pretty great. It’s only a matter of time till more companies start adopting this new system so we, as users, don’t have to deal with the hassle of manually transferring our own data.
