Google Allo

Anyone use Google Allo? I was under the impression that it could send SMS but I am not having too much luck with it. How does this app fit in with Hangouts?

It doesn't fit in with Hangouts. AFAIK it cannot send SMS, you need to use the separate messages app for that. Google clearly has no idea what they're doing with messaging, and it shows. FWIW, I've moved to using Signal (which on Android, will manage your SMS too). It's less full featured, but it's secure and you're not beholden to anyone.

Allo is the most ill-conceived app I've ever seen. I assumed it was an SMS app, but it appears to be like the chat part of Skype.

it does not have SMS

The idea behind Allo is that it is a whatsapp competitor. All you need is a phone number, not even a google account, and you can use Allo.

I don't like it, personally. but in reality, I have yet to find a messaging app that is really good. Because what people use is so fragmented, I use SMS, Hangouts, Facebook Messenger, Twitter DM, and I'm sure another one I'm forgetting about.

I use almost all of these to actually communicate with real people I know almost every day.

I use Allo, but with a smaller number of people, because most of the people who I chat with still use Hangouts, Facebook, or Viber. Some use, WhatsApp, and very very little use Skype.

The main purpose for Allo was to incorporate the Assistant to it. All that stuff Skype is doing now, …. they got that from Allo. Everything that I see from Skype, I saw it with Allo months before. Allo was also created to create a new messaging standard, RCS. Google is trying to do away with SMS because of it's limited functionality, like 160 characters. Last I read of this, Google is being Google by working with providers to do away with SMS and make RCS the standard. Google will probably be successful being that Android is immensley popular world wide and when it comes to working with partners, Google clearly knows their s**t.

I want to use it…I like but I have ONE friend whom uses it with me. ONE. Allo/Duo/SMS all need to be combined into one app in my opinion.
