Gartner’s numbers do not include Chromebook sales?

After listening to FRD, I believe Paul said something along the lines of if it wasn’t for business PC and Chromebook sales, this market would be in the toilet. I went to look at Gartner’s number though and it states that neither Chromebooks or iPads are included. Did I miss something or did sales increase in spite of Chromebooks and not because of them?

I was able to find the number I think from IDC and they include Chromebooks. That might explain why they were reporting a slightly higher increase than Gartner did.

IDC also said "Traditional PCs include Desktops, Notebooks, and Workstations and do not include Tablets or x86 Servers. Detachable Tablets and Slate Tablets are part of the Personal Computing Device Tracker but are not addressed in this press release."

Not exactly sure what that means but makes me think that Surface Pro and HP Envy x2 types of devices were not included?

Either way it looks like PC sales might be starting to bottom out for the time being which is a good sign I guess if you are a PC enthusiast.

But that seems odd to me.

I would definitely count Surface Pro style devices as PCs. Maybe the key is in the term “traditional PCs”?

In reply to Sprtfan:

FWIW, IDC shows growth in 2018Q1 while Gartner showed slight decrease.

IDC includes detachables like Surface Pros in their tablet figures. Implication from differences in IDC and Gartner figures is that Chromebooks produced more growth than detachables so far in 2018.

Around here most retail stores are rearranging their tech floors to showcase Chromebooks, phones, tablets, and 2-in-1s well before “traditional” or gaming PCs. You have to weave through to the back walls for most of those.

Good news is is that the Surface lines are generally right out there in the 2-in-1 section. Often close to the apple tables.

In reply to curtisspendlove:

FWLIW, too infrequently seen Lenovo Yogas are the only mobile computers I've seen in the last few years in brick and mortar computer retailers which have joystick mice. I consider such pointing devices a necessity, so I seldom see anything appealing while wandering through such retail spaces.

You missed something.

Business PC sales and Chromebook sales both contributed to growth in the quarter. Gartner, which does not include Chromebook, measured lower growth as a result. I've always averaged the two because they have different methodologies. One of the differences falls into the "what is a PC, anyway?" bucket. But you can see how not including Chromebooks skews the growth lower: Gartner says it was 1.4 percent, and IDC, which does include Chromebooks, says it was 2.7 percent.

In reply to paul-thurrott:

Thanks, I noticed the IDC included Chromebooks after posting. I guess I was expecting the impact to be greater than 1.3% and actually thought sales would have been flat or worse if Chromebooks were excluded. I have some connections to education though that probably skews my perceptions some.
