Email notifications have been turned on

As part of the new notifications platform, we have enabled email alerts today for when someone replies to your comment or on a thread you are following.

If you do not want to receive email alerts, you can manage those options here.

Update: We have turned on the ability to unsubscribe from all emails and to turn the feature off, you can find this in the settings control panel linked to above.

Damn Brad. Not good mate. Just got hit with several email one after the other just because somebody commented on a thread that I had commented on. I can't imagine how annoying that will become on a popular thread. So, I'm off to the settings to see what I can do. BTW, Fun Fact. Just while I have typed this I've received two more emails.

In reply to anchovylover:

Well intentioned, but a bit overwhelming. I think I turned it off but I'm not sure. The UI seemed a little confusing.

I really don't want to be that "give them an inch, they'll take a mile" guy, but I need to give honest feedback….we need a universal "off" switch for e-mail notifications. I think right now the only way is to turn off e-mail notifications for each new thread manually. I'm sure this can be better.

BTW, thanks for all the hard work on the site and listening to us.

In reply to FalseAgent:

Yes, that would be useful. My attempt at turning off email notifications even on a comment-by-comment basis failed. Either it doesn't work or I'm doing it wrong.

In reply to brad-sams:

"Never" didn't work for me, but turning off the slider to the left of each item and hitting save did.

In reply to brad-sams:

yup, that is what I did. Doing that turns off e-mail notifications for the threads that are listed there, but when I comment on a new forum post/blog post, e-mail notifications are turned on for the new thread.

This is a good feature, except … you need to name the subject of your emails to match the article so that notifications, per article, are named exactly the same. This will allow Gmail to group related emails together.

Something like "The article "And It Just Doesn't Work, has new comments". Put other details, like who made the comment, in the body of the email.

As it is now, I'm getting dozens of unique emails, filling up my inbox, about the same comment thread.

Brad, is it possible to provide an option where we only receive an email if someone has responded to one of our own posts?

Prepare to end up on spam blacklists due to this stupidity.

Edit – I guess I should add something constructive to this post, unless I am blind, I did not see any link in the bottom of notification emails to unsubscribe from them, consider adding an unsubscribe/turn-off link in the emails, if possible.
