Nintendo Switch Hits 20 Million Units Sold

The Nintendo Switch phenomenon continues: The game-maker revealed today that it has now sold almost 20 million units, along with 87 million games.
These figures came as part of the firm’s quarterly earnings announcement, in which it posted an operating profit of $274 million on revenues of $1.5 billion.

For the quarter ending June 30, Nintendo sold 1.88 million Switch consoles, bringing the total to 19.67 million. That’s about even with the 2 million units it sold a year ago when the console was still new. But looked at broadly, Switch sales have accelerated since last year overall: In December, Nintendo reported that it had sold 10 million Switch consoles in the device’s first nine months of availability. But it only took the firm 6 months to sell the next 10 million units.
By comparison, Nintendo’s previous console, the Wii U sold only 13.6 million units in its entire lifetime. So, yes, the Nintendo Switch is still a phenomenon.
Nintendo also revealed some game sales figures. As noted, game makers have collectively sold 87 million games on the console. Top-sellers include Super Mario Odyssey (11.17 million), Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (10.35 million), The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (9.32 million), and Splatoon 2 (6.76 million). It has some potential best-sellers coming time for the holidays, too: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and two Pokémon: Let’s Go game titles will ship this fall, Nintendo says.
