Nintendo Switch Hits 20 Million Units Sold

The Nintendo Switch phenomenon continues: The game-maker revealed today that it has now sold almost 20 million units, along with 87 million games.

These figures came as part of the firm’s quarterly earnings announcement, in which it posted an operating profit of $274 million on revenues of $1.5 billion.

For the quarter ending June 30, Nintendo sold 1.88 million Switch consoles, bringing the total to 19.67 million. That’s about even with the 2 million units it sold a year ago when the console was still new. But looked at broadly, Switch sales have accelerated since last year overall: In December, Nintendo reported that it had sold 10 million Switch consoles in the device’s first nine months of availability. But it only took the firm 6 months to sell the next 10 million units.

By comparison, Nintendo’s previous console, the Wii U sold only 13.6 million units in its entire lifetime. So, yes, the Nintendo Switch is still a phenomenon.

Nintendo also revealed some game sales figures. As noted, game makers have collectively sold 87 million games on the console. Top-sellers include Super Mario Odyssey (11.17 million), Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (10.35 million), The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (9.32 million), and Splatoon 2 (6.76 million). It has some potential best-sellers coming time for the holidays, too: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and two Pokémon: Let’s Go game titles will ship this fall, Nintendo says.

The top games are all family games, so a different primary audience than Xbox and SPS4. It would be nice to have more family games on Xbox and a portable Xbox device as well; maybe, hopefully with Scarlet.

I'm a huge Nintendo fanatic, but yes – I only like Mario, Metroid and Zelda, as well as 'Virtual Console' vintage games and puzzle games like Tetris (I'm showing my age.) Not a huge fan of the rest of the titles, but yes, totally family oriented audience, which is probably how the Switch came to sell so many units compared to Xbox.

Have to say, I've been loving my Switch. The flagship games are great, and the indy game selection is phenomenal.

I reluctantly bought one for my kid, thinking that the dock and "switching" capabilities were more of a gimmick than anything else. It was a nice surprise to see that those capabilities are useful, up to the point of me having to buy cables and stuff for Grandma's house.

We traded in our old XBox360 and a good stack of games for a Switch. It's pretty neat, especially the portable part, but I find the games to be really expensive, especially without a GamePass kind of deal and other specials. All of the flagship games are in the $60 range.

And it looks as if now they also want to start charging a membership fee for playing online multiplayer soon, like XBox Gold, so that would mean yet another subscription fee.

I bought a Switch last month, it really is awesome, I'm not surprised it's selling like hot cakes.

Literally just bought a Switch, extra joy cons, 2 pro controllers, memory card, charging cradle, screen protector, and a few games last Friday. I was in the. Mood for good old fashioned fun games like Mario and Mario Kart. Games that aren't too serious and games people could play together. I also figured that our nephews who we get every other weekend would enjoy it. Well, I quickly found out that the "fun" games aren't as fun for me anymore and I went back to Tempest 4000 and Frostpunk on the PC. The nephews played about an hour and then went back to the Xbox. The Switch never got touched again.

So the 800 dollar purchase will be returned except for the games of course because they have been opened. I guess I will take them to Gamestop and get credit towards something else. I'm really disappointed. I was excited to get it, excited to just do something fun and yet, I just didn't enjoy those games nearly as much as I expected and wanted to. A bowling and golf game like those in Wii Sports would make me consider keeping it but for some unknown reason after a year and a half, they haven't release either for the Switch yet.
