Xbox All Access Gives You a Path to Scarlett

If you are looking for an easier way to join the Xbox community, Microsoft is rolling out an updated All Access program that lowers the upfront cost of buying a console with monthly payments. But unlike previous times where the company has offered the subscription service, there is a new benefit that lets you upgrade to Scarlett.

Starting at $19.99 a month, you can grab an Xbox One All Digital Edition, 24 months of Game Pass Ultimate, and the option to upgrade Scarlett but there are a few things you need to know (more on that below). Xbox All Access is available to gamers in the US, UK, and Australia, starting on October 29 in Australia, November 5 in the U.K. and November 18 in the U.S.

There are three options to choose from, an Xbox One X bundle for $30.99 a month, Xbox One S for $22.99 a month, and the All Digital Xbox One S for $19.99 a month; all plans run for 24 months.

If you are wanting to upgrade to Scarlett, the next-generation Xbox that will launch in about a year from now, there are two paths to upgrading. There is a ‘special offer’ available now that if you buy the Xbox One X bundle before the end of 2019, you will be able to upgrade your console after you have made 12 payments. If you buy a console after the end of 2019, you will have to wait until you have made 18 payments to upgrade. You will be required to upgrade your console with the same vendor where you acquired your first console as well.

If you are planning to upgrade to Scarlett and are not buying the Xbox One X model, there will be an upgrade fee if you choose the Xbox One All Digital version but Microsoft does not say what this fee will be.

For those who are a bit hesitant to buy a new console a year (or less) before Scarlett is released, Xbox All Access may be a good option to start gaming today, without having to invest in a console that will soon be superseded.

Okay, so i've read a few articles and the 1 detail i'm not clear on

Is the Scarlett upgrade free, as in you start now, after 12 months trade up to a Scarlett, and 24 months from now you're done paying?

Or is it like the iPhone upgrade program where you buy now, make 12 payments, trade up to a Scarlett, and now have to make 24 more payments (36 total) before you own your console.

::edit:: I read the terms and it appears to be the 2nd scenario, where you trade up to a new console and have to get a new 2 year payment plan for 36 (ish) total payments) ::edit::

In reply to brothernod:

I think the way to look at it is that they allow you to 'rent' a current gen Xbox (and have game pass ultimate) until Scarlett comes out. Once Scarlett is out, you are back to a new, regular financing program for it.

In reply to brothernod:

Pretty sure Microsoft is going for the iPhone style upgrade program for this one. Where you are effectively paying to lease to console and get regular upgrades unless you elect to just finish paying off the console and get off the train.

I would imagine that we will start seeing more frequent console hardware updates in the future so you always want the latest and greatest it probably makes sense. I may consider this after Scarlett comes out. I have no reason to do this now since I already have an XBOX One S.

Reading the terms of the upgrade, looks like you need to enter in to a new 24 month contract. No word on the pricing per month of that contract that I could find. So, after paying for either 12 months on an Xbox One X ($371.88) or 18 months on One S ($413.82) or One S AD ($359.82+$20 upgrade fee=$379. 82), not sure how much more you need to continue paying on that new contract. Has anyone been able to find that information?

I think this is pretty clever for including game pass with the console. I wonder what other things companies will try do this subscription plans for hardware, obviously mobile phone companies do this today. Since the game pass is $15 a month retail I think this is a decent way to get people into an xbox in this subscription happy culture we live in today, without ripping them off. I suspect this will be popular for the holidays. A console that comes with games seems like something many parents would go for.

I'm guessing you still have to pay for Xbox Live?

What if you are already on the 30.99 option and about halfway through? Any upgrade options for people like me?

@Brad

Does this give a nice leak to the Scarlett Launch window being Nov 1st (ish) since that is 12 months after program start for the One X upgrade means Scarlett has to be released by then correct?
