Sony’s PS5 Dev Kit Spotted in the Wild
It should come as little surprise that gaming studios are starting to get their hands on next-generation hardware. Specifically, the PlayStation 5 dev kit has been spotted and surprise, it looks exactly like the patent application that Sony submitted for the hardware.
As you can see in the image at the top of the post, the dev kit is designed for functionality first, aesthetics second. The images were first posted on Twitter but little other information was released at that time.

But Sony has already started to talk about specs including storage and we know that ray-tracing will also be a big part as well. Of course, we are still about a year away from the release of the PS5 but expect to learn more about the hardware around E3 of next year.
The other obvious question is what does Microsoft’s dev kit look like? While Sony has clearly started shipping hardware to its partners, we haven’t heard as much about Scarlett. But fret not, Microsoft has started working with partners already for launch content for its next-gen console or is it consoles?
While Phil Spencer has confirmed that dev kits are being shipped out, he recently dodged a question about Lockhart still being alive. And here’s the thing, for a company that is only talking about one console, Scarlett, I have heard from quite a few insiders who are familiar with Lockhart and they don’t believe the project is dead.
Keep in mind, we are about a year away from release and more likely, six months or so away from production beginning for the new hardware. The release plans for both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Scarlett are still fluid and may change several times before release.

<p>As we are less than a year out from a world-wide launch, it's likely production on the actual wafers that will turn into the SOCs powering the next gen Playstation and Xbox consoles has either already begun or is imminent. The lead time from first production wafer starts to first packaged SOCs to be put into early stockpiling units is usually 3+ months.</p>
