Spotify Gets Improved Interface, Cortana Integration on Xbox

Spotify is rolling out an improved experience for its Xbox app today. The company is introducing a tweaked interface, designed to make your listening experience much better. The updated experience makes it easier for users to access their recently played songs, as well as things like Made for You and their personal library.

Along with the improved design and experience, Spotify is introducing another major feature: integration for Cortana. With Cortana integration, you will be able to ask Cortana to play whatever you want on Spotify, much like you can on Windows 10 and other Cortana-powered devices. The feature is only available in the United States for now, however.

Microsoft recently added voice control support for Alexa (and Cortana) on the Xbox One, so it’d be interesting to see if Spotify picks up Alexa integration in the near-future. Theoretically, that should be possible via Spotify Connect.

Do we know if this requires Spotify Premium like it does on the Invoke? I would be very happy if that limitation got dropped off.

When will Microsoft release a far-field microphone for the Xbox One X and S? Lacking voice control of the Xbox out of the box feels like a step back from when I had the original Xbox with Kinect. Starting and pausing tv shows from across the room without fumbling for the remote was super useful.

US only. Being a global technology company is a tough computer science problem.

In reply to ponsaelius:

No, but it is a tough legal problem, especially with services that interoperate and have a ton of privacy concerns. I feel you, though. We don't get new series of Masterpiece Theatre shows until sometimes almost a year later. So, give and take, you know…

Spotify Connect is the best for casual Xbox listening. Artwork on the TV and sounds going thru the big sound system but controlled seamlessly on phones/tablets/laptops. The Spotify team that made that work is a good team!

Great news. Would have been nice to have a more complete article though. No version number, how to update it or check if you already have the update. Most importantly if you are planning to use Cortana with it that you have to go into Xbox settings > Cortana > Settings > Notebook > Music ….and then link spotify to Cortana. Didn't work to do on Xbox, so had to find that setting on my windows 10 laptop, of course the Cortana notebook is hidden in layers upon layers of crap UI now. It used to pop up at annoying times, due to windows 10 search and Cortana being the same thing, but now is so far hidden that 30 minutes later I finally figured this all out.
