Hauppauge Digital TV Tuner for Xbox One is Now Available

But …so what? The Hauppauge Digital TV Tuner for Xbox One is really just a decade-old Hauppauge tuner dongle with a new logo on it, not something new. But on the good news front, this “new” digital TV tuner is a bit cheaper, and Microsoft is selling it in a bundle with an antenna you’ll probably need as well.

The Hauppauge Digital TV Tuner for Xbox One costs $59.99 at the Microsoft Store Online, about $10 cheaper than the identical Hauppauge 1191 WinTV-HVR-955Q USB TV Tuner which has been available since—wait for it—2003. (That said, the 1191 is inexplicably $10 more expensive at $69.99.) If you are going to give this thing a shot, you should opt for the $99.98 Live TV Bundle for Xbox One, which combines the Hauppauge Digital TV Tuner for Xbox One with a Leaf 50 indoor antenna. I bought one of these recently at Amazon.com for $60, so that’s a great deal, assuming you want this functionality.

Combined with Xbox One’s other entertainment options—on-demand video apps like HBO GO, Netfix, Hulu Plus and so on, live TV apps like Sling TV, TWC TV, Verizon FIOS, ESPN and the like, and cable/satellite TV passthrough via HDMI-in—the Hauppauge Digital TV Tuner for Xbox One almost rounds out what’s possible from a “sit and look at the screen” perspective. What’s missing here, of course, is TV recording: the Hauppauge Digital TV Tuner for Xbox One only lets you watch and pause live TV, not record it.

Here’s what you can do.

Watch live TV. Obvious enough, though to be clear, we’re talking about over-the-air (OTA) HDTV, which can vary by volume and quality depending on where you live and which direction the antenna is facing.

Pause live TV. This solution lets you pause up to 30 minutes of live TV.

Snap live TV. You can snap the live TV feed to the right side of your screen while playing games.

Control it with your voice. You can navigate channels using Kinect voice controls.

Stream live TV to SmartGlass-enabled devices. You can stream live TV to other devices within the home using SmartGlass or, on Windows 10, the new Xbox app. This works even if someone else is playing a game on Xbox One.

Microsoft is expected to ship its own Xbox-branded TV tuner adapter for Xbox One later in 2015, and my sources say this next, more official version will add TV recording functionality. We’ll see, I guess.
