Anniversary Update is Heading Out to Xbox One Preview Members Soon

While Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile users have been testing pre-release versions of the Anniversary Update for months, Microsoft has yet to provide similar access to those on the Xbox One Preview Program. But that’s about to change.

The first clue to the coming Anniversary Update test arrived via Twitter.

“Preview members, check your Live messages!” Microsoft program manager Emily Hanson tweeted last night. “Those with the most points after the last wave have a fun message waiting for them.”

Then, Windows Central [reported](Latest Xbox One Experience) that it had heard from users who received a message about testing the “Latest Xbox One Experience,” which they surmise (correctly, I’m sure) is for the Anniversary Update, which we know to be on a slightly different schedule—and functional makeup—than the Anniversary Update coming to Windows 10 (and Mobile).

So. The big question is what we can expect from this Anniversary Update Preview, as I think of it.

And the answer is … I can’t say with any certainty. But we know that Cortana is coming to Xbox One, as are Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps and games, and background audio playback. Just guessing, but based on previous conversations with Microsoft around the integration of Windows 10 features into Xbox One, I’d say that at least Cortana is a lock for this update.

The Windows 10 Anniversary Update is widely expected to ship on or around July 29, 2016 on PCs and Mobile, but it’s not clear what the schedule is on Xbox One. And if you think back to the original Windows 10 rollout on the console last year, you may recall that it happened in waves, so it’s possible that this update will happen on Xbox One over multiple releases as well.

I’ll have more about the Anniversary Update on Xbox One as soon as possible.
