Huawei Delays Its Foldable Device After Samsung Disaster

Huawei announced it’s incredible $2600 foldable device, the Mate X, shortly after Samsung’s Galaxy Fold. The device was supposed to launch sometime this month, but Huawei is rethinking its plans after the problems Samsung ran into with its own foldable device.

Samsung, of course, has pulled the Galaxy Fold and is yet to set an official release date for its foldable phone after initial reviewers found the device’s display breaking early on. And that has affected the company’s reputation quite a lot, and fans are unsure about the reliability of the $1980 device.

Huawei is now cautious after Samsung’s disaster with the Galaxy Fold and is taking some actions to make sure history doesn’t repeat itself. And so, it’s moving the release of the Mate X to September. A spokesperson for Huawei told CNBC that the company is now running more tests for the device after Samsung’s foldable device broke down.

“We don’t want to launch a product to destroy our reputation,” the spokesperson told CNBC.

Huawei delaying the Mate X makes a lot of sense, especially as the company seems unsure of the stability of the product. And with Samsung’s Galaxy Fold launch creating concerns around the durability of foldable phones, it would be irresponsible to launch a foldable phone around the same period.

That is the obvious reason for the delay, buy I wonder how much Huawei v. US has to do with it, if any.

The last thing you want from a trophy device is breakage. Well, at least until you've impressed your friends with it.

The most occum reason for this delay is that the devices actually share components. If Huawei had actually built its own folding hardware I reckon it'd be champing at the bit to release it.
