Ahead of Microsoft’s Hardware Event, Surface Laptop 2 Inventory Runs Dry

Considering that there is a Microsoft event on October 2nd and that there is a high probability that we will see a refresh of the Surface lineup, the fact that inventory is running low on some devices shouldn’t surprise anyone.

If you head on over to the Microsoft Surface website and configure a Surface Laptop 2, most of the options are now out of stock. There are a few higher-end devices, such as a black i7 model with 16Gb of RAM still available but all of the lower-end options are now gone from inventory.

If you are still looking to pick up a Surface Laptop 2, it may be wise to wait until after the hardware event when the next generation will be announced. Further, I would bet that on Black Friday, many retailers will be offering the second generation laptop at significant discounts.

Other devices, like the Surface Pro 6, Surface Go, and Surface Book are still in stock on the website.

Rumors have been flying around about a 15in Surface Laptop being announced along with my own reports from last year that Microsoft is planning to use an AMD chip in the refresh that will be announced this year. The company also has many other, and more significant announcements lined up; the October event is panning out to be one of the biggest in the past couple of years.

We don’t have to wait too much longer to see what Panos and his team have up their sleeve. The hardware event is scheduled for October 2nd and of course, we will be there.

Ran into this the weekend before last. My son needed a new laptop for school and we decided the base model Surface Laptop was a good choice for him at the current discounts. Microsoft Store was completely out of them and didn't know when they would get more in. After doing some checking, we finally found a Best Buy on the other side of town that had one left in stock. I suspect we wouldn't have found one at all if we had waited another day or two.

With the lower end models sold out, it shows Microsoft needs to lower the prices for future Surface laptops.

So fingers crossed that the rumored specs/prices are true.

In reply to Bart:

Those products being sold out might also lead Microsoft to conclude that they are priced appropriately.

Looking forward to seeing what they introduce! Hoping to see the Surface Studio monitor offered stand-alone and a refresh of the Surface keyboards with support for multiple devices using a switch similar to the Surface Precision Mouse.

Fingers crossed there will be a non-Alcantara SKU.

In reply to DarrellPrichard:

What is so wrong with the Alcantara covers? I have found it to quite durable and easy to clean. While my surface pro show plenty of scratches and wear marks on the back , the keyboard looks almost as good as new.

In reply to DarrellPrichard:

I'm not entirely sure what the point would be of a version without the Alcantara keyboard. That's the main differentiator for the product.

Wondering what this sort of thing means for warranty swaps? I still have a v1 under Complete Care warranty until March 2020. If it dies, do they replace with whatever they currently have on-hand then? Anyone have experience with that?

In reply to bassoprofundo:

They typically keep some refurbished units around for warranty swaps. I had to do a swap on a Surface Pro 4 after they were no longer widely available and the local Microsoft Store still had a supply of them specifically for that purpose.

In reply to bassoprofundo:

It depends, like jgraebner I had to do a swap on a Surface Pro 4 as well (Battery bulge). When I went to my local Microsoft store they had none in stock, nor did they see any in the pipeline. This was last December. They gave me an equivalent new Surface Pro (2017) under my Complete Care warranty. The only catch is it didn't extend my Complete Care warranty. It expired on the original Surface Pro 4's end date. Still no complaints here. My Surface Pro (2017) is still humming along and no issues with it.

If it doesn't have fast charging via usbc, wifi6, and intel gen10 it's pretty well doa. Also having a 5g option available at the start would be nice.

In reply to MachineGunJohn:

Reportedly, they are switching to AMD, so I think the target for this version is more going to be on reducing the price than on modernizing components. I would tend to think USB-C is pretty much a given, but I wouldn't count on wi-fi 6 and 5G is probably not a possibility.

Not to be "that guy", but out of all the configurations, there is actually one and only SKU that surprisingly still has some stock left. If you select the Platinum -> 16 GB RAM – > Core i7 -> 1 TB Storage variant, you can still manage to place orders for that model. </p>

Brad / Paul – you should report on the latest battery problems with Surface. About a month ago a firmware update has affected SP5&6 and SL2 where after being on fully charged the battery appears at 75% instead of 100% and rapidly decreases. Total battery life is about 1-2 hours for most. It made its rounds on the internet 3-4 weeks ago which you can see by a web search, but has quieted down except for on reddit where everyone is fuming and waiting for a fix.
