Microsoft To-Do Integration in Cortana Rolls Out to Everyone

Microsoft has started rolling out Microsoft To-Do integration in Cortana to everyone. The company first started testing the new feature back in December, allowing users to sync their lists and reminders with Microsoft To-Do.

It has now started rolling out the feature generally, which means everyone should be able to use the new feature, as long as you are in the supported regions. The feature is automatically enabled, and syncs your Lists and Reminders in Cortana with To-Do. This means you can add things to your To-Do with your voice via Cortana now, or just see what’s in a list that you may have created while you were on your PC, for example. It’s pretty handy.

There doesn’t seem to be a way of turning this feature off — unless you disconnect your Outlook.com account.

The feature is available in the United States, United Kingdom, India, and Australia. You can learn how to set it up here.

See, this is exactly why Cortana works better as an interface than as a platform. In the past, they tried to shoehorn too many functions into Cortana, so you ended up with a voice assistant that tried to manage its own reminders and lists, etc., which duplicated existing functionality and created confusion about where to find your information.

Remember back in the day, when you'd look at a software box to see whether or not it provided mouse support? Building Cortana as a platform is akin to building a mouse that only works with its own exclusive, bundled paint app. While that might be neat for a minute, what you really want in the long run is for the paint app that you already use (as well as your word processor, spreadsheet, etc.) to support the mouse as an input device alongside other tools (e.g., keyboard, etc.) you may have.

And I can see Cortana becoming another I/O device, like your mouse, keyboard, camera, mic, or speaker. And just like in the early days of those peripherals, some software applications will support it, while others may not. But this kind of integration makes a lot more sense moving forward.

To me, Microsoft beginning to position Cortana as an interface rather than a platform is really encouraging, because it means they feel the assistant doesn't need to rely on its own ecosystem as much. And hopefully, as more apps and services add Cortana integration, we'll see it become just as ubiquitous as those other peripherals we all use every day.

so….now make it useful by allowing non-awkward integration into Google Assistant, Alexa, and Siri.

F$%*ing "supported regions" again; what is wrong with these people? Apart from lack of commitment, it's their fatal flaw.
