Lemmings Finally Comes to Mobile

It took over 25 years, but iconic Amiga puzzle-platformer Lemmings is finally coming to mobile!

“We cheered when we saved them and cried when they died as a schoolkid back in the ’90s,” Serkan Hassan announced on the PlayStation Blog. “Now it’s time for a whole new generation to save or slaughter those adorable critters once again, with a brand new Lemmings game out today, designed specifically for your mobile device.”

Lemmings was originally released on the Commodore Amiga and it was quickly ported to virtually every gaming platform in the ensuing years. A smash hit since its inception, Lemmings inspired countless knock-offs and official sequels as well. And now it’s been reimagined for the portrait orientation of smartphones and tablets.

“We’ve designed levels that are played in portrait orientation, as this is the most comfortable position to hold a device with one hand,” Hassan explains. “We worked tirelessly on touch controls, removing secondary elements like camera control and making it as simple for players to assess the level, plan a strategy and execute it.”

Lemmings is free on both Android and iOS but it does have some in-app purchases for the addicted.

This is great. Because every time I compare our world to the game people don't know what I'm speaking about. Finally my reference will be current!

Did anyone else read this article just to see which tech company fanbase Paul would poke fun at? I feel so let down…

Oh, the feels… Used to play the hell out of this with my grandfather (he'd just really came on board to using computers for work). We got him comfortable by having him play Solitaire in Windows then Beat the House (DOS casino simulator) and Lemmings.

In reply to DocPaul:

Completely agree. Just came back to update my post. All those grubby microtransactions are wrong. Under no circumstances should you ever be able to purchase "150,000 gold coins" for £99. It's disgusting.

If you're not aware of it (and with the general disdain for the Microsoft Store and Windows 10 many of you may not be) Lemmings is available in the Windows store. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/lemmings/9wzdncrfjcdm?activetab=pivot:overviewtab. I've been having a ball reliving the game. Looking forward to it on my phone now too.

So it's not a port of the original classic but a new game with amateur graphics? No thanks.

Kinda fun game but I've reached the limit of what I can play without either waiting for credits to recharge or pay to recharge them faster. So now I'm uninstalling.

Making Lemmings with this microtransaction economy misses half the point of Lemmings: sandbox experimentation. Anything other than strict efficient play is penalized in this version. Boo. The developers are probably too young to have played the original.

I remember when Lemmings came to PS3. I dunno who did the port, but it was seriously f*$&ed up. For starters, the biggest thing I remember about it is this:

A really BAD fan-made MIDI file of the Lemmings theme circulated around the early days of the Interwebz and whoever wrote it made it specifically for some bad MIDI device (probably some odd-ball AdLib/Sound Blaster FM synth clone) where they had a custom pitch-bend set up for one of the instruments. You see, the MIDI file actually had a pitch bend instruction in it to compensate for whatever the detuned instrument or sample was set to. It sounded horrible on anything else because any normal MIDI synth always uses C-tuning, and that instrument was all out of tune with the rest of the song. Well, wouldn't you know it, the "musician" at the group that did the PS3 port must've found that version and just added the Jamaican swing beat to it because that detuned instrument is present in that version of the song as a rip-off of that bad MIDI file. The original MIDI file had it off by about 2 whole notes which you could fix in a MIDI sequencer easily, and it seems like whoever did this take tried to salvage it, but it comes out still sounding all wrong.

Here's what it should've sounded like (the string lead): youtu.be/rjMxbKhnTzM?t=38

And here's the PS3 version (the horn lead): youtu.be/xMkhSEUH2Yo?t=54

:: sigh :: it sounds like in-app purchases are horrible (at least for the iOS version)

That said, I love lemmings, so I’m going to give it a try.

Update: so there is some complaining in the ratings, but that is nothing new. I’m not a fan of false time limiting to drive in-app purchases, but as long as you don’t plan on wanting to binge play you should be fine. (I actually am actively annoyed by that ploy and choose to spend less money…but I’m sure they will make a bundle on the game.)

I played for maybe 30m or so before I ran out of energy. Looks like you get 60 energy to start and it replenishes at a rate of 20/hr.

So by the time I want to play again it will be fine. It’s a pretty good casual game so far. And I like that they adapted it to play well in portrait orientation.
