Microsoft Ships Hyperlapse for Windows, Windows Phone and Android

Today, Microsoft delivered Hyperlapse for Windows, Windows Phone and Android, providing a neat way to create smooth, time lapse videos from the shaky original videos you shoot on your mobile devices and other cameras. If you’re not sure whether you want or need such a thing, just check out the demo videos. This tool looks pretty impressive.

A time lapse is essentially a sped-up video. So you record a video while skiing down a mountain, driving a car down a windy road, or whatever, and then use software to speed it up, creating a neat effect. But those sped up videos—time lapses—are often jerky and hard to watch because the time lapse process actually “accentuates the jerks and bumps,” as Microsoft says, especially for hand-held or amateur videography.

What Hyperlapse does is smooth out those bumps using software-based video stabilization technology from Microsoft Research. This means your herky-jerky video footage becomes smooth and, as important, watchable.

Not convinced? Here’s a neat promo video that shows how it works.

Hyperlapse works with the built-in camera on your Windows Phone or Android handset, but you can also use Hyperlapse Pro for Windows to take any video—like the helmet-mounted video you might take with a GoPro camera—and convert it into something watchable. It’s a complete set of solutions (well, except for iOS, but you have to think that’s coming).

The Windows Phone version of Hyperlapse is now out of preview—Microsoft shipped originally shipped this tool on Windows Phone a few months back—but the Android and Windows versions are new and are considered beta. Here are the download links:
