Android Messages Gets a Material Design Refresh Overhaul

Anyone using Android Messages will definitely notice this latest update, which applies a Material Design Refresh to the app. But there are some additional changes to look for, too.

Android Messages is Google’s stock messaging app for Android, and it’s the default messaging solution on the company’s Pixel handsets and on Android Go phones. I’ve been using this app since the Nexus days, and I happen to prefer it to the third party solutions from other handset makers. Plus, there is a very useful web app version too.

Previous versions of the app used the original Material Design look and feel, with solid blocks of primary colors.

This is what Android Messages previously looked like

But with this week’s new release, Android Messages has been updated to Google’s Material Design Refresh design language, previously called Material Design 2.

The changes are immediately obvious.

The solid blue bar at the top of the app is gone, and Android Messages now resembles other apps that have been updated to this look and feel. The top is white, normally, and styled like the rest of the app. And the contact and group icons utilize softer, pastel-like colors now. The “Start chat” button has likewise been restyled from a simple “+” circle to an oval shape with text and a graphic.

Android Messages with the new Material Design Refresh

Less obviously, Android Messages has picked up a new dark mode, which is enabled via the “More” (“…”) menu.

The new dark mode

Likewise, the web app version of Android Messages has been updated, too, and it now supports the new look and feel and the dark mode.

You can download Android Messages from free from the Google Play Store. It’s available for most modern Android handsets, though I’m only seeing this latest update on my Pixel at the moment.

Does anyone know if Android Messages will queue up a text if you lose cellular connectivity and send the message once cellular connectivity is restored?

Looks like they've dropped the home screen widgets with this release as well, which is something I unfortunately have come to rely on.

This is a rolling release. It started about 3 days ago, and hasn't hit all devices/users yet. I don't have it, nor do I have a waiting update in the play store.

The web version update is much more subtle. The dark mode has existed since that launched. the main update for the web version is just a font change, and some slight text realignment.

I still don't have dark mode in my YouTube app yet, so not holding my breath.

What's the deal with everyone's text bubbles the same grey with black text in group texts??? It's no longer obvious who is saying what.

Is this just a setting I need to fix? The coloring is reversed. My text bubbles now have the accent color and the other person's are now all grey / black.

I got this update this morning on my Galaxy S7. Not a fan of the standard look, but the dark mode is OK. Unfortunately, it's not REAL dark mode with #000000 black so it turns off pixels entirely.

The Phone app on my Pixel 2 XL got a similar Material Design 2.0 update last week sometime. Looks exactly like the new Messages app.

Meanwhile, I'm still noticing both a "Settings" and a "Control Panel" in 3 year old Windows 10. And when I choose many settings, they give me an old-style Windows 7 or earlier dense menu underneath. Such as the file explorer viewing options.

I would have thought 3 years would be long enough to get the UI fully cleaned up for the Windows 10 appearance standards.
