Google announced this week that the eagerly-awaited Night Sight camera feature will begin rolling out this week. And it will be available on all three generations of Pixel handsets.
“Because life’s best moments aren’t always perfectly lit, we developed Night Sight, a new feature for the Pixel camera that helps you capture vibrant and detailed low-light photos without a flash or tripod,” Google’s Alexander Schiffhauer explains. “Over the next few days, Night Sight will be coming to the front and rear cameras on all three generations of Pixel phones.”

That’s fantastic news because it eliminates the need to purchase one of the buggy new Pixel 3 handsets.
And Night Sight does look impressive, adding yet another photographic advantage to the Pixel lineup and further separating the cameras in these handsets from those of the competition. Even without Night Sight, the Pixel family of phones—like the Nexus 5X and 6P before them—already excel in low-light photography. And it looks like Night Sight will improve matters even further. Check out the sample shots on Google’s blog for some great examples of why.
Basically, Night Sight eliminates the need for a distracting and annoying flash or an impractical tripod.
“Before you press the shutter button, Night Sight measures your natural hand shake, as well as how much motion is in the scene,” Schiffhauer adds. “If Pixel is stable and the scene is still, Night Sight will spend more time capturing light to minimize noise; if Pixel is moving or there’s significant scene motion, Night Sight will use shorter exposures, capturing less light to minimize motion blur.”
