Surface Pro 3 Updated to Support New Type Covers

Microsoft today issued a big set of firmware updates for Surface Pro 3, all of which are related to supporting the new Surface Pro Type Cover and Surface Pro Signature Type Cover.

The catch? It appears that these updates will only appear on those devices still running Windows 10 version 1607, or the Anniversary Update.

This news is odd… My Surface Pro 3 has been using a finger-print-enabled Surface Keyboard for many months, since it came out in fact. The finger print reader is how I login when not in tablet mode.

In reply to zself:

I believe the keyboard you have is a generation older than the ones this update is enabling support for.

What? Not on 1703! Ugh, sometimes Microsoft…

Seeing as I refuse to "upgrade" my SP3 to Win 10, guess I'll never see the update. That's fine. When the SP3 was released, we saw a device that FINALLY made Windows 8 logical & functional. Don't get me wrong, I have Windows 10 on my desktop, but for a 2-in-1 device, Windows 8 makes the most sense.

So these are drivers, not firmware in the classic sense, right?

I still haven't received the last Firmware Updates for Surface Pro 3. I wonder if it's because my SP3 has Creators Update (Which I might add was updated automatically by Microsoft, I didn't manually apply it).

As you have said, the only folks going to see this firmware update are those running Windows 10 on their SP3s. Mine runs Win 8.1, and while I have my issues with 8.1, now that I have learned to configure it to my liking, I see no reason to switch it to Win 10. In fact, had there not been so much ill will towards Windows 8.1 already, the SP3 could have been a showcase for the OS.

Well it's nice to know they haven't relegated the SP3 to the dust bin yet in a misguided effort to inspire upgrades.
