Lumia 950 and 950 XL Getting Double-Tap to Wake, More in New Firmware Update

Microsoft announced today that it has released a new firmware update for its flagship Lumia 950 and 950 XL handsets. And among the improvements in this update is an eagerly-awaited customer request: Double-Tap to Wake.

Word of the new firmware update comes courtesy of an unnamed Microsoft support engineer posting in the firm’s online forums. Availability will vary by phone model, region and network provider, he says, with “the first batch of phones” receiving it starting today. The remaining ones are expected to receive the update gradually, he says.

Here’s what’s new.

Double-tap to Wake. Easily one of the biggest customer requests, double-tap to wake will be enabled with this update.

Wi-Fi connectivity improvements., Microsoft has fixed an issue where Wi-Fi would drop the connection randomly and a scan of networks would occasionally not return any results.

Bluetooth connectivity improvements. No word what these may be, however.

Camera improvements. Microsoft has improved image and video quality, improved Auto-focus, and has fixed a problem that was causing slow motion capture to skip frames for some users.

Cellular connectivity improvements. The firmware update includes a fix for a problem that caused occasional network loss for some users.

Audio quality improvements. There is a fix for a problem that caused voice call audio to get scrambled for some users.

Stability and reliability improvements. As you should expect of any firmware update like this.

My Lumia 950 is currently installing Windows 10 Mobile build 14383, but I didn’t see the firmware update listed. I’ll keep checking.
