Netflix Will Now Let You Stop Auto-Playing Previews

When it comes to the viewing experience, Netflix offers a really good, consistent experience across devices. There is, however, one really annoying thing about watching Netflix.

Autoplaying videos.

For months, Netflix has had a feature where it starts auto-playing trailers for shows and movies when you are just browsing. Hovering over a show or just sitting on a show while you’re browsing on the home screen would automatically start playing the previews for shows and movies.

And frankly, that was incredibly annoying.

Netflix has finally heard all our complaints and is now going to give users the options to disable this feature. “Some people find this feature helpful. Others not so much. We’ve heard the feedback loud and clear — members can now control whether or not they see autoplay previews on Netflix,” the company tweeted on Thursday.

Users can control the autoplay feature from the Manage Profile section within Netflix. The company gives users two different options: disabling the ability for the next episode in a series to autoplay, but more importantly, disabling auto-playing previews when browsing.

I wonder how much this stupid feature increased views. Lots of people were probably influenced to watch more, but I'm sure lots of people like me just quite browsing altogether.

This has been one of the leading irritants in the Netflix interface for me. I contacted them a couple of years ago about killing that "feature" and they finally did something about it. Now if they would stop sorting materials into things they believe I have watched or am interested in, and just give me a list, that would make me less crabby about the monthly fee.

An earlier version of the Netflix app had autoplaying previews and they got rid of this feature; I assumed they figured out that many customers find it annoying. So I was doubly annoyed when they brought it back.

Doesn't seem to work. I disabled both options, clicked on a couple programs in my list to test is, and they both autoplayed anyway.
