Sonos Launches Roam Ultra-Portable Speaker

Sonos today announced Roam, an ultra-portable and waterproof smart speaker design for use at home and on the go.

We built Roam to give customers a way to bring the Sonos experience with them wherever they go,” Sonos CEO Patrick Spence said. “It’s not only our smartest and most versatile speaker, it’s also our most affordable. Roam provides the opportunity for millions of new customers to get started with Sonos, and is the right product at the right time as we begin to gather again with friends and family.”

Roam is the smallest smart speaker that Sonos has ever built because it’s designed to come with you wherever you go. It supports both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, and will seamlessly switch to the latter if you’re moving around and Wi-Fi becomes unavailable. It’s also a Sonos speaker, meaning that it can integrate with existing Sonos home setups. It supports Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for voice control, Apple AirPlay 2, and connects to over 100 audio streaming services.

Like Sonos Move, the firm’s other portable speaker, Roam provides Auto Trueplay functionality so that it can automatically configure its sound experience for different environments on the fly, and it works when streaming via Bluetooth as well as Wi-Fi.

Like other Sonos speakers, Roam is available in black or white. It provides 10 hours of continuous playback, and it keeps a charge for 10 days when not used. It ships with a USB-C cable for charging but you can purchase an optional $49 wireless charging base with magnetic connectivity or use any Qi-compatible charger or USB-C cable as well.

Sonos Roam is available for preorder starting today and costs $169. It will be available for sale starting on April 20.

A lot to like like here. Will likely buy on day one.

Just wish it had aux input, but that's the same complaint with almost all Sonos speakers.

I love my Sonos stuff. Yesterday we did BBQ and it’s great to have music inside synced with a portable speaker outside, I’m totally happy to pay a premium for this.
