I stopped buying integrated routers/wifi 3 years ago due to the constant security issues and slow updates. Sold my Orbi mesh on Ebay and replaced with a dedicated 4 port from protectli and I can run anything from Untangle to pfSense and they are updated more often that the big players like Asus and Netgear. For access points I did use "older" AC3100 Asus routers in AP mode that I got from eBay for like $25 each. I finally bit the big one and got two Unfi POE access points that are 802.11 AC Wave 2 and couldn't be happier with the performance of these over the consumer wireless access points. Starting up the Unifi controller was easy enough and the access points are configured remotely and have been hands off for about a year minus a firmware update that came last month. I trust that I should get another 2 to 3 years out of these access points and then make the leap the next Wifi standard if there is a need to go that route.
