Amazon today announced a smaller version of its Echo Show smart display that will retail for just $90 when it goes on sale in June.
“Since we launched the first Echo Show device, customers have told us they love asking Alexa to show them things, whether it’s a recipe for banana bread, their shopping list, or music lyrics,” Amazon senior vice president Tom Taylor says. “With Echo Show 5, we’ve made it even easier and affordable for customers to add a smart display to every room of their house. The compact form factor is perfect for a bedside table or desk, plus it has a camera shutter for added peace of mind, and new Alexa privacy features for even more control.”
Echo Show differs from the original Echo Show, which debuted two years ago and costs $230, in several key ways. As noted, it’s smaller, but it’s also more attractive with a less sharp-edged design and a 5.5-inch wide-screen, rather than square, display. Amazon notes that it sports a new smart home dashboard, but I assume that is coming to the larger Show as well.
From a privacy perspective, the Echo Show 5 includes a microphone/camera off button and a built-in camera shutter. But Amazon is also introducing new and simpler ways to delete your voice recordings on all Alexa-enabled devices as well. You can say, “Alexa, delete everything I said today” to delete all of the day’s recordings. And users will soon be able to delete their last request by saying, “Alexa, delete what I just said.”
Echo Show 5 can be preordered now and costs $90. It will become available on June 26, Amazon says.
