Why should I buy a Surface device? Why should any regular consumer go to best buy and instead of shopping around, instead of asking a Geek Squad for comparisons and input, instead go straight to the Microsoft section to buy their Surface device because they already knew before they entered the building that the Surface device was RIGHT FOR THEM.
Apple clearly defines what it means to buy an Apple product. You are trendy, tolerant, cool, intelligent ...... you a special ... so special that we even eloquently package your device because you deserve an "unboxing experience".
What does it mean to own a Surface device?
If we were to use the 2019 event to figure this out .... it would be a disaster.
Panay came out, looking like a nerd that was trying to look hip, spoke like he was in Quaaludes with long awkard pauses. He was boring, so boring and lethargic that he had to remind us ... multiple times ... how pumped he was.
Then they send out a woman who is not important enough for me to even remember her name, who proceeded to cuck and insult her husband .. on stage .. live ... TWICE. Is it sexist to bring up her vocal fry which is a highly irritating voice equivalent to nails on a blackboard to a lot of people?
Panay then acts super paranoid about revealing the weight of a device ... while revealing the device itself. It was a bad look.
Videos and music was really out of place considering the nerd vibe going on. The whole setting looked like a seminar in a UFO convention at the Marriott. Kiss ass clapping at inappriopriate times, lasting too long. And they didnt even cast the screen of the devices to the big screen behind them when they were pointing out things like a new icon bar on the Neo. Panay brags that you can hold the Surface laptop for a long time in a way no normal person would hold it for a long time.
Is this what owning a Surface device means?
After viewing that event, this is what i associate with "Surface": boring, monotonous, disrespectful, irritating, paranoid, lazy.
People don't buy Apple because its better. They dont even buy it because it's prettier (even though they will say that is a reason). People buy Apple TO MAKE A STATEMENT. Because have that Apple logo ... says something about the person. It virute signals an image to other people.
The Surface lineup .. is just a lineup of devices ... in a world of HP's, Dells, Asus, Lenovas, and Razors. Nothing special about them. It says nothing when you buy one. It means nothing when you own one. It has no identity.
The 2019 event was horrible and it seems like nobody wants to admit it.
It failed to inspire.
It failed to make me want to wake up at 2 o'clock in the morning and wait in line for their product.
it failed to make me realize I needed their product.
and most importantly, It failed to define what it means to own what they were selling.
Why is nobody challenging this in the tech journalism world.
Does anybody REALLY think that from one phone generation to the next, a year later, Apple suddenly found a way to squeeze out 5 extra hours with normal use?
The point is that I haven't seen anyone with the balls to say "This is BS until you prove it"
Maybe ... just maybe ... music playback ..... and that's a big maybe ... but this 5 hour claim was just thrown out, with no context and peopl are lapping it up ... Without strenuous pessimistic.
If you have two seperate Windows devices, and you use an Xbox Controller on both, it seems like the Xbox controller remembers the last device it was connected to and will not automatically connect to the secondary device even if the previous device it was connected to is not found. Aggrevating, but no problem, I'll just go to the bluetooth control panel and press Connect on my Xbox Controller.
It's not there. You literally have to uninstall the Xbox controller, then press the bluetooth button on your Xbox controller, connect, and reinstall the device.
But at least we have Notepad and Calculator updates (cheap shot for sure, but it felt good).
On a side note, Also it should be possible to do the things you can do in the Bluetooth control panel straight from your bluetooth icon in your bottom bar without having to bring up a whole other screen.
... they just love the ability to enforce THEIR borders.
Apple has a border around Ipad to protect THEIR SOVEREIGNTY. You have to get permission for your app get in, and if at any point, you do something they dont like, you will deported until you do what they want. The also want you to show your green card, called itunes, to show your citizenship to Apple so you can have the right to transfer movies and music. Hell, they even claim they have a border and thus, sole ownership, around shapes like circular rectangles.
Microsoft, before it got cozy with Linux, had a border around a lot of PC devices in the early days of Windows 10, as in secure boot, to discourage you from being multi-cultural in your operating systems.
Game Developers have protected their property within the border of Launchers such as Steam, Origin, and now Epic, where you must get permission to use the things you have bought. Some of them believe in borders so much, that they don't even support inter-state travel between Launchers.
Phone companies have created a nice, bigly wall around the drivers for their devices, making installing any alternative linux bases phone operating system virtually impossible. No Free, Open Source Driver Care for you.
And just like a Country defends their borders (or is supposed to) by military force , these companies defend their borders ... BY LAWFARE, court order force. They dont call the generals ... they call the lawyers.
It seems like when it comes to their ecosystems, their property, their best interests .... the don't only love borders ... their business model DEPENDS ON THEM.
The X doesnt work to get rid of notice.
Just saw a video demonstrating Mouse Support. Basically, the mouse isnt acting like a normal mouse ... its acting like your finger so the same tedious crap you had to do wiith your fingers, your just tediously doing with your mouse now. For instance, there is no natural click and drag selection process that you would come to expect from using a mouse (which is one of the situations people were wanting a mouse for). Instead, You have to double tap the first word of the sentence you want to select, then you have to CAREFULLY hover your mouse over the blue dot, then you have to select and hold the blue dot and move the blue dot and release.
This is just one of the examples I saw, but it make me wonder how many other scenarios we all think a mouse funciton that acted like a normal mouse would be so much better for on an Ipad when in fact, its going to be just as tedious and aggrevating (perhaps evern more so now since they have dropped the ball)
Really Apple? What is going on there?
This was a simple thing and you F'd it up.
Xbox Accessories is wanting me to create an account with Xbox Live ..... and login .......... to remap my controller.
um ... no.
Not to mention that at this point, I am unsure if I will have to login everytime I need to change my setup according to the game I am playing which at times I will no be able to do since I am on a laptop and not always online in certain situations.
I am playing Nascar Racing 2003 and want to switch the LB/RB into the LT/RT, because the game is old and doesnt recognize the back triggers at all because they didnt exist back then.
Ive seen some incredible wallpapers on the login screen.
For a long time, Skyrim players dreamed of a Skyrim MMO game and pleaded with Bethesda to create one. Bethesda listened, and what Bethesda delivered was NOT a MMO Skyrim, but a MMO that had nothing to do with Skyrim.
Ipad users have pleaded with Apple to have a REAL file system. So Apple listened ... and what Apple delivered was a FIles app that is NOT a real file system.
A lot of Gaming companies have been putting SJW politics into their games, and their sales have been going down. So, what do they do? ... they make new games ... with more SJW politics and tell their customers that they are the problem. Battlefield V is already being reported to be 50% in places. And The Witcher TV series has hired writers that brag about being Patriarchy Destroyers, and have "diversified" the cast at the dismay of many long time Witcher fans who see this as forcing identity politics down their throats and watering down the entire culture of the game ... i mean, isn't one of the main points of making a Witcher TV series is to at least cater to Witcher fans to make sure that they are guaraneed viewers ... and THEN second, construct the TV series in a way that can also cater to the general public without pissing off the very people that should be guaranteed to watch it?
Ive tested a lot of Music streaming service apps ... I find the UI in most to be totally horrible. In Spotify, it is not intuitive getting your music library to only show downloaded music. The offline switch, only makes music in your library that you have NOT downloaded ... unplayable. You STILL see the non-downloaded music in your library. It makes no sense. If your offline, it's unplayable by DEFAULT .. because .. your offline. duh. The secret is to go into filters and filter for downloaded only. I'm still not sure what the offline switch is for, i guess is your online but don't want to play something that hasnt been downloaded? but really, do people really do that?
And I've downloaded generic localized music players too ... A LOT ... that literally will take my music file folder with music labeled 01,02,03 and RESTRUCTURE the order for no apparent reason and there is no way to sort by file name. And I mean, there are A LOT of top of the list music players that do this. Its unbelievable.
What is going on? Why are so many companies and app developers doing stupid crap? Why are so many insistent on telling us what we want, instead of listening to what we want .. and producing a product we want? Who are making these apps? Who are in charge of these decisions? Do they live is such a technological bubble world that they can't produce common sense apps that do simple things the way most reasonable intelligent people in the real world would expect to do it?
When did this elitism seep in? Perhaps I'm old fashion, but I always thought businesses were designed to make money, yet I am seeing businesses not only choosing, but in some instances, bragging about making decisions that are financially hurting the company. It's mind boggling to me. And to be fair, its our fault too, the consumer. I think these tech giants know we are going to end up buying their product anyway. In some instances, its a choice of bad or worse, like in Ios Vs Android, where I either choose Apple telling me how I'm supposed to use their phone or Android letting me do what I want at the cost of stability and privacy.
Perhaps I'm getting older and grumpier, but I think we are in some troubling times. I remember when I used to play around as a kid on my IBM PCjr on Norton and look at the sectors of my floppy disk and change the command.com screen output after it was loaded to say something different on the screen by searching the sectors on the drive for the appropriate machine code output and changing it . It took me forever to figure it out, and I was so happy when i did. Today, there are people that will argue with me that they have TOTAL CONTROL over their files in Itunes ... because ... they can click on them and play them. Its like something is missing ... the curiosity is gone ... the adventure is gone ... having to reinstall your operating system for the 34th time because you were playing around with crap trying to so something ... is gone.
We are heading for a time when these same corporations and app developers will have TOTAL CONTROL, and they are already half way there. You won't own your games, you wont own your music, you won't own you movie/TV collection, you might not even own a car at that point... and the concept of OWNERSHIP will be lost to corporations that ALREADY are producing products that are half baked, arbitrarily restricted, and walled gardens to control you ... and all the farts like me who remember what is what like to have control over ... you know .. the crap you BOUGHT .... will be dead and gone ... and this control will be the new normal and nobody will bat an eye. And of course, I could go on about how the psychological implications of a society that doesnt own crap will be more prone to Socialism and even Communism ... but I'll save that for the Thurott political website.
now get off my lawn :)
