I would like peoples input to help me please.
I'm starting to think about what to go for. I am a Prime member on Amazon and I have an Android phone. So which way do I turn.
Does one have specifics over the other which makes it the better choice. I just cant decide. Well i am swayed to Amazon but is that the best choice.
I would like to hear from those who have either and there likes, dislikes. The benefits or lack of benefits from there device they use.
I would like an all round device, one that connects to all smart devices and services. And the one that will connect better to the other if there is something, a particular thing you want or need. Say using Google device to play Amazon music.
Thanks in advance.
So what are my reasons for asking this question.
Well I am looking to upgrade from my current device a Surface pro 4. This device being nearly 2 years old I would like a new more modern device with newer specs.
I have had my issues with Surface over time, well not my Surface rt which still works and is used by my inlaws and my surface 2 which i use on holiday mainly at the beach. I went thru 5 Surface 3's because of issues so upgraded to a pro 4, but am on my 4th pro 4 because of issues with them.
I do like the Surface brand and how they pushed the other companies to bring out and create wonderfull new decives. I like the form factor of the Surface with detachable keyboard. But with some of the devices now like the Yoga I'm really not sure what to go for.
And is Surafce actually PREMIUM enough. Other companies adding new better ports and wonderful new beatuful designs. Has Microsoft been afraid to innovate Surafce because of the issues they had. But they have kept the price as at a premium.
So would I be better off now with something from HP or Lenovo or someone else. Yes I was a die hard WP fan but changed a year ago to my awesome OnePlus 3t. Is it time to leave Microsoft hardware now, the only difference here is that I would always stick with a windows device.
Any thoughts from those who do use these other premium type devices would be of great help.
Thanks for reading.
I have wondered whether to write this or not. Whether anyone would actually be that interested. But after some thought I thought why not.
Why, well because of those hardcore WP fans. And yes even thought i now have a daily driver that is an Android I am still a WP fan.
The main reason for this is that I cracked the screen on my OnePlus 3t and am having to use my 930 while its being fixed.
I have been useing my OnePlus for just over 4 months now so what are my thoughts and the phone, using Android and things in general.
My biggest influence in moving to Android was all that Paul wrote and said on podcasts. I thought i needed to embrace what was happening in the mobile world.
Price was a hude factor in my choice. I was very close to getting a Pixel. But at nearly double the cost of my OnePlus I could not see how I could justify this. The one HUGE difference with Paul and me, the camera is not of utmost importance. I have a semi professional SLR with additional lenses for photography.
But as Paul has found that the OnePlus is a real high end phone and compared to the WP's ive had and still have it beats them hands down. The OnePlus is an awesome phone.
Android has the apps and on a 5 week vacation to the US is had all the apps i needed. And some are truly awesome. You cannot beat a purpose built app. The web just doesnt do it . I can only say that from using the Amazon app on Android as one example and the Amazon web on WP. Android wins hands down.
Now I know the true dedicated WP fans will probably dismiss most of what i say and I do understand. But you need to embrace the future because companies are NOT going to make great apps for WP.
But and yes a big BUT, WP as an OS kicks Andoird's ass. WP OS does so much better, the intergration, the ease of reseting a phone and getting everything back, the home screen too (ok a simple basic feature but Android and IOS are boring). And after a day with my old 930 i miss Windows Phone. It rocks. Is better as an OS. 100% better.
Now there are some slight things i like with Android on my OnePlus, yes that are better than WP, but ultimately WP OS wins hands down.
The problem with this is that in real life if you want certain apps then WP is nearly dead.
So what do you go for Android or IOS. Well i will never ever get something from the devil (Apple). You can find as good devices for a fraction of the price.
Now I am just waiting for the OnePlus 5 and Microsofts apps that make Android good and to see if the Arrow launcher can really start to do what it should and could do.
Thank you for reading.
I would like to firstly clarify my Subject Title to this post.
Brad Sam’s is truly an integral part to Thurrott.com. He plays an amazing part to this awesome sites. And Paul and Brads first ring daily for mainly premium members was a genius move.
Now the reason for the post.
First Ring Daily for this week has been the best. To hear from the team behind Thurrott.com opened up to what the site is all about and who plays such a part. I know I had commented that I thought that this would be a good idea. Realizing that there is a team behind Thurrott.com that it would be great to see and hear from them.
Personally, the two podcasts with Andrew were my favorite. To get to know Andrew a little better and then Paul interview. That was one of the best podcasts I’ve ever heard. Getting a new insight to who Paul is was awesome.
Ultimately this is just to thank the team of Thurrott.com for all they do.
Thank you for letting us to get to know you all a little more.
For those that are interested I thought I would give another update about going from and only ever using a WP smart phone to something else, for me Android, with a OnePlus 3t. Its been around 3 weeks now as my daily phone.
You can either laugh at this first part or say WTF you idiot. Now the very first day of use I thought WHAT IS WRONG with this phone, I can't answer a call. Now never having used anything else apart from a WP no one told me to slide the phone button to answer a call not just touch it ??.
Now to the serious stuff.
Firstly the phone. I have to say its awesome. Its fast very fast, well compared to what I've had before my 950. The only thing hardware wise that I wouldn't say isn't as good, being picky is the screen. But then for the cost of the phone I think too have a top processor, good memory and storage its worth the trade off. And the phone construction and build feel and look premium.
Battery life WOW. I can be a heavy user sometimes. In the past I would always charge my phone in the day for worrying it would die. Not now. And if it does need charging quick, super quick.
Now about using the phone. Do I miss my Windows Phone. Yes I do, well elements of the phone OS. There are parts of the WP OS that are better, I could micro manage certain tasks, pinning certain settings. Now some of this, the bits I miss will be because I am still learning how to use an Android based phone. Yes every OS will have parts better then the other. But this is about looking at the whole package, not 1 or 2 elements of an OS.
Would I go back to my Windows Phone as my daily driver though. For a fan of WP, someone who converted many to it 'NO' I wouldn't. I would love too yes. But now for me it does come down to that one thing that WP is missing. APPS. Real good apps made for mobile. And the lack of a real premium device. WP had some great phones but looking back they lost there way.
I think it was on one of my other posts someone commented that they could and do use the web for the missing apps, sorry but that does not compare to a purpose built great mobile app. As an example I will use the Amazon app. Using this is no comparison.
I know there will still be Windows Phone fans that will not agree with what I say, exactly how I used to be. But from A Windows Phone fan to all others. Is it as bad as all that NO. Yes it takes time but now I have made that jump, as I said before I should have done this earlier. Well from my last WP my 950.
I still have so much to learn about using this new OS which is actually now an exciting thought not that daunting OH NO the evil of Google, Android thought.
I probably wont do another update. There isn't really must else to say. All I hope is that my thoughts of going from WP to Android from an ordinary regular guy helps, helps those that were just like I used to be. Its really not as bad as you think and you actually may enjoy something new to play with.
Thanks for reading.
This is about my experience of going from WP to Andriod. I have had the phone for 1 week and used it as my main phone for the last 4 days.
The phone I chose is the OnePlus 3t. The phone as a phone is awesome.
Battery life is like i have never experince. An app that on WP has always drained the battery so so quick, yes does on my 3t but nowhere near the same. The battery is excellent.
Finger print sensor. WOW. Not much else to say but WOW. Awesome amazing, i'll add that.
Now too the most important part that those WP fans will want to know. The user experience. Yes at the moment I am missing the detail of WP 10 fast ring insider build offers. My 3t is waiting for 7.0 so from what i read things will get better.
But overall yes i miss what Ive always done with WP arrange and resize tiles, but honestly this is the only reason to stay with WP. I do miss being able to pin so much more to the home screen to, especially some settings.
I do have the Microsoft arrow launch which is great. Gives in a way some WP feel.
I have got used to the way things work quite quickly. Some detail like setting stuff is taking time. Doing certain things quickly like I have done. But then isnt that the same with everything new it can take time.
Windows Phone went in a total different direction which was new exciting and yes better in many many ways than IOS and Andriod. It was new, is it the future NO.
I will post again because from my own experience as a WP fan I refused for ages to agree with Pauls take on WP.
BUT THE APPS. DAMN PEOPLE. Yes apps. You say like I did I have all i need. Thats because you dont know whats out there.
From a WP fanboy to others. Just do it. Treat it as an exciting challenge. Something exciting to do. I should have done it a year ago rather than buy my 950.
I certainly dont regret my change now and know I wont. How. Sorry but it will come down to the amount of apps that can allow you to do so much.
Thanks for reading
Has anyone else here installed the latest Windows Mobile 10 insider build.
Are you getting these problems
Text messages not sending.
Other apps not opening.
Email not sharing photos from the photo app.
WhatsApp messages disappearing then reappearing.
How can it get SO SO SO SO SO bad.
I am a WP fanboy from the UK. I got a WP as soon as they launched and have been a fan ever since. I’ve converted many too WP. I currently use 950.
Now comes the but. I have bought a OnePlus 3t. Yes im going Andriod. Why you may ask. Well yes in general WP does all I need. But there are times when there’s an app i could do with especially when going on holiday. So yes I’m leaving WP.
If anyone is interested I am going to update this thread with my experience of going to Andriod, having only ever used Windows products for everything.
I’ve has the phone now 3 days. At present it is not my daily phone. I’m getting the apps I need and getting used to how it works.
So what do i think so far. Well its interesting, exciting trying something new. Do I miss parts of what WP is, how it works hell yes. But I think the reason for that is is that ive only ever used WP.
The phone is quick, very quick and the battery since its first charge still has 43%. That will be interesting to see when Im using it full time.
The finger print scanner, WOW, AMAZING. Quick at unlocking the phone is an understatement.
Getting the phone up and running was easy thanks to Paul’s advice and help from posts he’s made.
Will I miss WP, yes. But this is real life and times have moved on. And compared to my 950 the 3t feels like a premium phone with hows its made.
As I said I will update this or put knew posts for those on WP so they can get an honest opinion from a WP fanboy and his experince.
Thanks for reading.
UPDATE. The OnePlus 3t is now my daily phone. Lets see how this goes.

My question, sorry as many will be in the coming weeks and months are to do with going from WP to Andriod.
Can I get my text messages from my WP 10 to an Andriod device ?
This is from someone who has lived completely in the walled world of Microsoft for literally everything. ANd Ive loved it.
I am one of those true Windows Phone fans. Its the only smart phone ive had.Its the one Ive conviced plenty of people turn too. Yes I say I have all the apps that I need, I don't need all those other ones on other platforms.
Well Ive listened to Paul for a number of years and came to a realization that I would have to change. Change from my Windows Phone to another platform.
I have a small tablet that can dual boot windows 10 or Andriod.
Yesterday I thought, after having it for a couple of months and not using the Andriod side, lets see what google and android have to offer. Well WOW.
APPS APPS APPS
With all honestly the first apps I downloaded where all the Microsoft ones. There awesome.
Then the amount of apps that are there that some no not everyday use ones but I now see what I have been missing and now wish I never bought my 950. Should have stuck with my 930 for longer.
Very soon I will be getting my new Andriod phone. The only reason I am doing this is because of Paul's honest opinions. He helped me look at things with open honest eyes. And he looks at it for the personal user. Hes using his years of experience to help US.
To all those Windows Phone fans do you need apps, well we didn't because there aren't really any so we would have to say that.
Ok for the very very very few that is true, my inlaws perhaps. The easy way Windows Phone works is perfect for them.
Yes I love windows phone but now Ive been shown the light I now love apps and the amazing amount of ones that I could have used over the last year.
People open your eyes and just try it. You might just be surprised.
Thank you Paul Thurrott
Why are people BASHING Paul so much because he has an opinion and thoughts on tech.
I've been following Paul for a number of years now and over time have loved what he has written, enjoyed his podcasts and yes disagreed many times with what he says.
Now my only platform I have ever used is Microsoft and windows. From a desktop, laptop, tablet, zune, and smartphone. So yes its a very closed world that I have been part of.
I am a die hard Windows Phone Fan but, yes a very big but. I know that I will have to change at some point. No that isn't really any everyday apps that I'm missing from my WP. But there are plenty I have noticed over the last year I could have used if they where there, but they are NOT. And I think it will only get worse. So yes I know I will have to change and for me it will be Andriod.
I have privately got annoyed plenty of times with some things Paul has said but are continuing to listen to him and his HONESTY in what he says. His logical approach as a tech journalist over I think 20 yrs, many anyway. He says it as it is. And as time goes on things I disagreed with mostly over time I have had to agree with him, not everything though.
It is really staring to bother me, that, I feel that many on this site are getting too personal with there comments in the way they have ago at Paul especially, not really noticed anyone bashing Brad yet. Personally some of the comments should be removed in my opinion.
If you don't like what he says why do you bother reading his articles or listening to his podcasts. Just go else where for whatever you are looking for.
Yes we are all allowed an opinion on everything and yes we will not always agree. But there is no need to get personal as I think some are.
Yes this is my opinion and I'm sure many will disagree.
Lastly Paul and Brad keep up the good honest real work you are doing. Thank you for all you are doing.
