Apple Adds “Time to Walk” to Apple Watch, Fitness+

With the launch of Fitness+ in late 2020, Apple has really started to differentiate Apple Watch from other smartwatches. The addition of a new “Time to Walk” feature is, ahem, another step in the right direction.

“Even throughout this challenging period of time, one activity that has remained available to many is walking,” Apple senior director Jay Blahnik says in a canned statement. “With Time to Walk, we’re bringing weekly original content to Apple Watch in Fitness+ that includes some of the most diverse, fascinating, and celebrated guests offering inspiration and entertainment to help our users keep moving through the power of walking.”

Fitness trackers and smartwatches have had walk reminders for years now, of course. But Time to Walk is a bit different in that it is an “audio walking experience”—on Apple Watch for Fitness+ subscribers—that includes podcast-like episodes in which you can pretend to be walking with “influential and interesting people as they share thoughtful and meaningful stories, photos, and music” while enjoying photos and other images on the Apple Watch face.

There are four episodes available at launch that feature country music star Dolly Parton, NBA player Draymond Green, musician Shawn Mendes, and Emmy Award winner Uzo Aduba. And Apple says that new episodes will appear in the Workout app on Apple Watch from a different guest each Monday through the end of April.

This sounds a little dangerous, walking while viewing the watch face? Even on a treadmill this isn't a great idea.

In reply to darkgrayknight:

I just tried it…. basically the watch face will do a haptic when a picture is shown….you look at it, then it goes back to the workout/waling metrics. Not a constant thing…. however, seems a bit novelty and the nostalgia may wear quickly.

I wonder if the episodes will automatically be on the watch for those rare times you might forget your phone and not have access to something you actually want to listen to.

I love my Apple Watch but having Spotify to stream music without my phone and having Pocket Casts to play podcasts without my phone is infinitely more valuable than this feature and those capabilities are already available without another Apple subscription.

Looking at random photos while taking a walk feels a bit weird. I wonder if it might be a pre-seeded feature meant for Apple's long rumoured augmented reality product?

.What I find interesting is the effort to create content that is designed for the watch. The small historian nerd in me is trying to think of anything else’s like this.

Apple reinvented the slideshow? It’s a keynote for your watch?

really unique and sort of weird. I wonder how library of Congress or other type content archives will handle this.

In reply to Dan:

Not true. They display photos during the episodes on the watch

They’re so weird they obstruct sleeping. Might be good for this though everyone seeing you would wonder why you have such a puzzled look on your face while walking.
