Windows 10 Version 1803 to be Called the Spring Creators Update

Windows 10 Version 1803 to be Called the Spring Creators Update

Microsoft has still not officially announced its branding for Windows 10 version 1803. But now we know the real name.

And yes, it’s the Spring Creators Update. Sorry. If it helps, yes, this is my fault. Someday I’ll tell that story.

But as I’ve pointed out in the past when others complained about this groan-inducing re-use of the same name over and over again, it makes sense. Spring Creators Update is consistent with the naming used for previous two Windows 10 feature updates.

Many will complain, naturally. That’s what we do.

Spring isn’t Spring in some parts of the world, for example. Spring doesn’t help identify the year, either. What’s Microsoft going to do for Windows 10 version 1903? Call it the Spring Creators Update … again?

Sure. Why not?

After all, Xbox reuses Spring and Fall in its own system updates, and it never makes any mention of the year. And more to the point, Spring Creators Update is just the name of the update, it’s not really the name of the resulting Windows 10 version. The real name of this thing is Windows 10 version 1803. That name is cast is stone, and it cannot be confused for other Windows 10 versions.

More to the point, when it comes to Windows 10, we have plenty of real issues to raise, and the name of a single feature update, or even the overarching product branding that Microsoft uses across multiple features updates, simply doesn’t crack the list. It’s just not that important.

Anyway, we learned about the naming when The Walking Cat on Twitter asked about how Windows 10 version 1803 identifies itself internally via PowerShell. The answer? The Windows 10 Spring Creators Update.

Get used to it. Fall will arrive eventually, and then we can start complaining again.

Still not convinced about the 'Creators' part in the name, but Spring-update and Fall-update will do just fine. Fits nicely in the whole 'Windows-As-A-Service thinking'.

Are MS still ramming this 'creators' thing down people's throats? I'd say 99% of Windows users don't create anything and never will. They logon, start Chrome and consume, and they don't need Windows for that, which many will eventually realize!

Just call it the 'Spring 2018 Update', then follow that with 'Fall 2018 Update'. At least you'll have consistency.

My answer to the "why not" question is this: Complexity and ambiguity are the enemies of security. In a big organization, when a non-technical auditor or compliance person asks if the Windows desktops in the organization are running the "Creators Update," both their question and the answer to it could be misunderstood. It could be argued that in that case the auditor should be asking about versions by number instead of name, but we're all busy and some people are more likely than others to understand the differences. Using the same name for different things is not intuitive, so intuition isn't necessarily a good guide for that non-technical auditor. If they'd called 1709 the "Mixed Reality Update" and 1803 the "Timeline Update," it would make things simpler and remove the potential ambiguity.

Is the thinking that everything in the Redstone line will be "creator" focused (which hasn't really been the case), hence the continuation of the name? Once we move on from Redstone, I assume the name will change?

If this is really the last version of Windows i wish the year would be somewhere in the name so its easier to identify that milestone, Windows 10 – Spring 2018 or Windows 10 – Fall 2018 . Its better than Windows 10 Redstone 2, whenever that was released…..

Some people still think "Windows 10" is a version of Windows, but it is not. "Windows 10" is the new brand name of the production, it is no longer just "Windows". So, if the rebrand "Windows 10" in the future, it will likely not be "Windows 11". Probably "WindowsOne" or something completely different, if ever.

The Windows 10 forever thing is all about the enterprise. They are trying to get enterprises used to the idea of regular updates. Most conservative companies will never upgrade to the latest version of Windows (in fact many will hang on to their version of Windows until Microsoft rips it from their hands). You have to make those version numbers disappear. The plan is to finally get these companies on Windows 10 and hope that they don't think of Spring and Fall updates as new versions. How many "emergency" upgrades from Windows 7 will we see in 2020?
