Windows 10 Version 2004 Gets its 5th Cumulative Update

Microsoft has issued a new cumulative update for Windows Insiders in the Slow ring, and this one is so minor it’s almost comical.

There is one fix, for “an issue that prevents the Windows logo key + J keyboard shortcut from giving focus to certain Windows tips,” Microsoft says.

We’ve been looking for a sign that Windows 10 version 2004 is ready to head out to the general public, and since this is the 5th cumulative update that Microsoft has issued for this release since its feature completion in December, it’s only natural that some would wonder if this is it. But here’s one more major milestone we need to pass first: Windows 10 version 2004 needs to head to the Release Preview ring first.

So, we’ll look out for that. In the meantime, enjoy that WINKEY + J action, I guess.

<p>With how much testing has gone into this one build, I think it has a chance of being the most reliable version of Windows ever released. I used it through the insider program several months ago and it was already rock solid.</p>

Yeah, it’s amazing what you can do when you don’t add many features and stretch out the development timeline from 6 months to 15 months.

<p>2004 is a great release – the IPU process has been super streamlined and is typically finishing in less than 20 minutes – we've gone into broad deployment with it across all of our customers – it's that solid.</p>

<p>Windows 10 is becoming too heavy with all the useless features like WSL2. Microsoft should make Windows 10 modular, pick and choose what we want to install. I say WSL2 is useless because there is Linux. Just use Linux if you need Linux. All this stuff has no place in Windows, that's my take on it.</p>

Windows 10 IS modular: WSL is optional and isn’t installed by default. With WSL 2, you have to download it from the Store.

<blockquote><em><a href="#534325">In reply to paul-thurrott:</a></em></blockquote><p>I meant Windows 10 install in general. Too many baked things in and very little number of custom options. What I really mean by it is very highly customizable install where I can say, no tablet option, no store, no cortana, no telemetry, no any of the apps, no this or that and when Windows 10 is installed there is absolutely no trace of any of those things. And If I was to try to use tablet option, there would be no such option in settings.</p>

<blockquote><em><a href="#534323">In reply to red77star:</a></em></blockquote><p>"WSL2 is useless". No. As a developer who wants to leave behind Apple, WSL2 is necessary. I don't want to write code in Linux. Linux as a server is great. Desktop OS, yeah no thanks. Windows is finally a viable option for open source devs with the addition of WSL2. It's fine if you don't want it, but MS will gain back a good amount of customers with this as I'm fed up with Apple overcharging and giving "pro users" garbage hardware options. </p>

<p>Well, considering I must have had 3 revisions of the March 2020 cumulative update for Windows 10 version 1909 come down this month… this seems fair :)</p>

<p>It looks like 2004/20H1 may reach the Release Preview ring sometime in April as the month of March has come to an end.</p><p>Most likely in mid-April or sometime after Easter, Paul</p>
