Amazon Brings a Prime Video App to the Microsoft Store

An Amazon Prime Video app is now available for Windows 10 in the Microsoft Store. It’s virtually identical to the web experience. That said, it does support downloading content for offline viewing, unlike the web app.

“Watch movies and TV shows recommended for you, including Amazon Originals like The Boys, Hunters, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, and much more,” the app description reads.

Amazon lists the following app features:

  • Download videos to watch offline – anywhere, anytime.
  • Rent or buy thousands of titles including new release movies, popular TV shows, and more (not available in all countries/regions).
  • With Prime Video Channels, Prime members can subscribe to more than 150 premium and specialty channels like HBO, SHOWTIME, STARZ, and Cinemax. Only pay for the channels you want, no cable required, cancel anytime (not available in all countries/regions).
  • With X-Ray, view IMDb information about the actors, songs, and trivia for videos as you stream.

You can download the Amazon Prime Video app from the Microsoft Store.

To me paying Amazon for prime membership is waste of money.

Amazon used to be much better but lately I've been shopping more locally or using other online vendors because you never know what you're going to get. Will you get a real product, or will you get a cheap knockoff? You don't know.

Dude. You gotta get past the constant negativity. Why comment on this article if you’re not even using Prime?

It’s just an app. We don’t need to know your opinions about the corporation. That’s not a conversation. It’s just a diatribe.

We have a Prime Video subscription, but not Prime itself, as I do think that's a total waste of money. PV content is ok, with a few good things (The Boys is excellent), but the UI is a mess though, this doesn't look any better. Finding what you're looking for is hard, and Amazon still insist on splitting shows by streaming quality, so you have to hunt for the UHD versions when the HD version will be shown separately. No logic whatsoever, and this new app doesn't look any better.

Now Amazon needs to bring back the Kindle and Comixology apps to the Microsoft Store. 🙂

Looks like it displays 21:9 content properly on 21:9 monitors, so a definite win there.

I have a very good WiFi connection on my laptop. This Windows app lets you download videos from Amazon Prime (playback is only through app) which is different experience for my laptop. It also has settings for Download quality. When using Amazon Prime through a web browser before I could only play videos and not download them.

Thanks Paul, for the link on your website because if I go to Microsoft Store and enter "Amazon Prime Video for Windows" there is no result found. I wonder how many other apps in the Microsoft Store do not show up in search like this one.

Is there any way to "cast" from the app to a bigger screen TV? Maybe to Fire TV or Chromecast? Like Youtube does.

I have Amazon fire TV stick and it works like this app. When you use it you have a direct connection to your Amazon prime video acct. It plays videos based on your source (tv/receiver) video playback ability.

In reply to JMarco:

Thanks JMarco, I have a Fire Stick and a Google Chromecast, but I have terrible internet service, so what I am interested in is the download function. If I download a video and then watch it later, will the new Windows app allow me to cast the program to a TV or do I need to watch it on a computer?

Anyone get better than 1080 HD with this app? ie HDR or UltraHD/4k?

But perhaps "the" feature is downloads (for flights etc) and in that scenario HD 1080 should be enough.
