Windows 10 Version 2004 Usage Surges Into First Place

Windows 10 version 2004 is now the most popular version of Windows 10, with almost 38 percent of all Windows 10 PCs using this version. That’s according to the latest data from AdDuplex, which cites a survey of over 100,000 PCs for this month’s report.

“[The] October 2020 Update [which upgrades PCs to Windows 10 version 20H2] just started rolling out and it’s too early to make any assumptions about its rollout velocity at this point,” the new report explains. “In the meantime, May Update becomes the most used Windows 10 version out there.”

Microsoft had just released the October 2020 Update and thus Windows 10 version 20H2 six days earlier, and it is purposefully metering the release to ensure quality. So it’s no surprise that it “barely registers on [the] chart” that AdDuplex supplies showing the relative usage of each Windows 10 version over time. 20H2 accounts for 1.7 percent usage in its first “month” of availability. (Really six days.)

The rise of its predecessor, version 2004, into the top spot, however, is quite interesting: AdDuplex says that this version is installed on 37.7 percent of the PCs it surveyed. Meanwhile, Windows 10 version 1909 is in second place with 32.4 percent usage and 1903 brings up the rear with 22 percent usage.

<p>A <span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">survey of over 100,000 PCs indicates that Windows 10 2004 is on the majority of these Windows 10 PCs. 100,000 PCs is a small subset of the hundreds of millions of Windows 10 PCs worldwide. The accuracy of this survey could be questioned because the base that was surveyed could be biased. For example, it doesn't make sense for the majority of large enterprises to push out 2004 which has 18 months of support when 1909 still has 30 months of support. I would think that 1909 should be the most popular version worldwide right now if large enterprises were included in the survey.</span></p>

You go to war with the army you’ve got. But a 100,000 unit subset is not small for this type of measurement. It’s just “PCs out in the world,” it’s still a great measurement.

<p>I still can't get it on my Surface Book 2. Wondering if Microsoft has just given up on proper OS support of the Surface hardware.</p>

<p>I forced the download on my Dell desktop and Yoga laptop without any issues so far. Which that is what I did when 20H1 came out.</p>

<p>It's the most used not "most popular". </p><p><br></p><p>For it to be the most popular there needs to be a choice of Windows OS's, there isn't. PC's come with 10 preinstalled so there is no 'choice'. </p><p><br></p><p>Inaccurate comment and I for one still use Windows 7 more than 10 which I hate because you have to fight with it daily to use it, 7 just "works"</p>
