Xbox Will Reportedly Adopt Discord-Like Gamertags

Microsoft could be introducing some major changes to how Xbox Live accounts work. The official Xbox app is going through a lot of changes, especially on the social side of things, and Microsoft could be working on some interesting changes for the entire Xbox Live network itself.
According to Windows Central, the company is working on a new style of Xbox Gamertags that essentially act as the main identity for every Xbox owner. Right now, Microsoft requires you to have a unique Gamertag, and pay $10 for every time you want to change your Gamertag. But that’s changing soon.

The company could soon be adopting Discord-like Gamertags. If you are unaware of how that works — essentially, Discord allows everyone to have whatever username they want, except there’s a unique numeric number at the end of the username. So for example, if you want to take the username “Rodeo”, and there’s already someone with that same username, you will get something like “Rodeo#001”.
That’s pretty easy to understand, but I don’t see the point of the new system apart from making the setup experience quicker for new users. Keep in mind, if and when the new system does launch, you will continue to have your original Gamertag without the numbers at the end, but you’ll
Microsoft is also apparently toying with the idea of introducing redesigned Xbox Live profiles that allow users to show off their stats from other platforms, including Nintendo, PC games, and even PlayStation. But allowing users to show off their stats from other platforms would make a lot of sense as Microsoft’s been trying to open Xbox Live to more than just Xbox.
