Microsoft is Finally Testing Keyboard and Mouse Support for Xbox One

Three weeks after promising that it would do so, Microsoft has finally opened up keyboard and mouse support testing on Xbox One.

“Xbox One Preview Alpha Ring members will begin receiving the first 1811 Xbox One system update,”m Microsoft’s Bradley Rossetti announced. “We are bringing keyboard and mouse support to Xbox One! With this new input support at the platform level, developers can now build mouse and keyboard support in their games if and how they choose. It’s important to note that mouse and keyboard support for games is added on a title-by-title basis, entirely at developers’ discretion.”

That 1811 bit—for November 2018—means that keyboard and mouse support will be coming to Xbox One quickly, and won’t be relegated to the next major update, scheduled for early 2019. So that’s good news. And we also know which title will be the first to get this support: Warframe.

In addition to keyboard and mouse support, the 1811 Xbox One system update will also include improved searching capabilities in the Guide, plus various fixes. And some testers will see what Microsoft calls “experiments,” which are unnamed experimental features “designed to gauge interest and solicit feedback from a more focused group.” In other words, Microsoft still loves its A/B testing.

Would be strange if it didn't.

I am very interested to see if this turns my Xbox One X's into killer PCs….They are all connected to smoking 4k sets and this would be another convenient access point for my apps.

Three weeks from stating intent to announcing the beta is hardly "finally". That's actually pretty quick.

Oh, and you have a typo toward the end of the first line of the second graph. (extraneous "m")

In reply to MikeGalos:

They have talked about adding Mouse and Keyboard support for 3-4 years. So "finally" is the appropriate word.

In reply to TriplePlayed:

No. Industry PUNDITS have talked about it. That's the same game that we saw with Microsoft Research's experimental Courier device. Nobody from Microsoft ever said it would ever be a product but the pundits said so much about it that they believed each other and claimed a non-product was "cancelled" when it was, as planned, never made a product.

Keyboard has been there a long time. I've hooked up keyboards to my Xbox one and it would work. That was before I got a chat pad. Good to see mouse support though too. Now if you gave me a desktop OS too so I could use it for basic work and computing, now you got something… :). I wouldn't mind getting a notification of an email I opted in to for work of something in case someone emails me with an emergency and I need to pause it to answer it.

And of course, how about a podcast app?

Will I be able to use the mouse and keyboard to navigate the home screen, point and click through photos, enter search text and the like, or will the k and m only function when “switched on” by a particular third party app/game?
