Apple Music Gets New Friends Mix As Company Increases Focus on Social Connections

Apple is launching a new, weekly playlist mix for Music subscribers. According to some users on Reddit (via TechCrunch), the company is rolling out a new Friends Mix playlist for Apple Music subscribers.
Cupertino is yet to officially announce the new playlist, but it’s a step forward for the company’s music streaming service. Friends Mix will join Favorites, New Music Mix, and the Chill Mix playlists on Apple Music. It is essentially a curated list of songs your friends are listening to, updated every Monday, with roughly 25 songs.

While Spotify has been lately moving away from social connections on its streaming platform, Apple seems to be doubling down making your connections with friends stronger. The new Friends Mix playlist will be mostly based on what your friends’ tastes, so could be an effective way of discovering new music. Spotify’s take on this is entirely different — the company focuses more on providing personalized playlists like Discover Weekly, which is based on your own listening habits.
“We worry about the humanity being drained out of music, about it becoming a bits-and-bytes kind of world instead of the art and craft,” Apple’s CEO Tim Cook recently said in an interview. The latest addition to Apple Music is clearly a part of the company’s efforts to help nurture the humanity in music.

<p>Historically Apple has been terrible with integrating social features into their apps and OS. That said, this is far better than when Apple rolled that god awful "Ping" feature into iTunes. That was truly garbage. </p>
