Confirmed: OnePlus 5 is Coming This Summer

Here’s some good news for anyone looking for a modern, value-priced smartphone flagship: OnePlus has confirmed that the OnePlus 5 is arriving this summer.

OnePlus told The Verge that the OnePlus 5 will succeed the OnePlus 3T … and not much else.

“The phone is called the OnePlus 5 and not the OnePlus 4 because the number four is considered unlucky in China, where OnePlus is based,” the report notes, explaining the number jump.

But we don’t need The Verge to learn about the next OnePlus handset, which I’m very excited about thanks to my recent experiences with the excellent OnePlus 3T. Fortunately, tons of details have leaked.

Here’s what we know:

The OnePlus 5 will be a Samsung Galaxy S8-class device with a Snapdragon 835 processor, 6 GB of RAM, and 128 of internal storage. That doesn’t surprise me, as OnePlus has always provided top-end specs at a value price. What is most interesting, perhaps, is the camera. (You may remember this was the sole disappointment with the 3T.) The OnePlus 5T will utilize a dual-camera system, like that on the iPhone 7 Plus, and that just might put this device over the top.

Other details include a front-facing fingerprint reader (previous devices utilized the back), a Full HD screen (rather than Quad HD or some higher resolution), and a traditional (non-curved) screen. (Update: Actually, the 3T uses a front fingerprint reader too. My bad: I’ve been testing too many devices lately. –Paul)

I am very excited about this device. And if you, like me, are not interested in dropping over $800 on a Galaxy S8, then this is one to watch out for.

Right when I was considering dropping cash on the 3T this news comes out. Love the timing, I'll wait a couple of months and hopefully get a better camera.

I hope OnePlus hits a homerun this time. They have been noteworthy in the past, but nothing extraordinary in my opinion. These few details do look good. Will it evolve into a better-than-good phone though? Personally, I may wait for the "13" version because that's my lucky number :)

I'm a little concerned about the price segment that OnePlus seems to be moving into. The original OnePlus One was $300, and was consequently the perfect device for people who wanted a successor to the Nexus 5, which the $600 (and way too large) Nexus 6 definitely was not. OnePlus has raised the entry-level price on each successive device, and they're now very close to flagship territory. Samsung did them a favor by raising flagship prices up over $700, but I still think that paying nearly $500 for a OnePlus is a really heavy lift for a lot of people (especially when last year's flagships all have better cameras and cost about $200 less).

Rather than chasing the high-end like have been doing, I'd love to see OnePlus work on making the best phone they can make for under $400.

In reply to MikeCerm:

Agree – I have a OP3 and I look at my wife's Moto G5 and think that could work for me if something happens to my OP3. OP should be watching its back on prices rather than halving samsung/apple. I think $400 is still expensive for a gadget I carry around in my pocket.

I agree with you 100%. Just because it is 2/3rds the price of a current Galaxy does not mean it is a bargin. In reply to MikeCerm:

I don't understand the parenthetical comment about previous OnePlus devices fingerprint readers. My OnePlus 3t has the reader on the front.

I have been mostly happy with a Nexus 6P since the day it was released — best Android phone (and best supported) I have ever had. Sorry, Samsung. You had your chance back in the S4/S5 days and destroyed my interest in an unrecoverable way.

The OnePlus 5 is a strong candidate to replace the 6P if I start to get end of life vibes from Google. I will look at the next-gen Pixel as well, but it's going to have to be significantly improved and maybe a lot less expensive to win that competition.

Interesting. Keeping the cost reasonable with a traditional HD screen is smart, it's all you really need.

Aaah… this is the news I've been hoping for and dreading at the same time. This is the device that will potentially make me jump ship from my Lumia 930 over to the dark side. I've been agonising over this for months. The release of the Galaxy S8 didn't help. Now my course is clear.

Tell me what I dont understand here…wouldn't a refurbed s7, s6, or note 5 (or insert other brand like Moto) from ebay with a 3rd party insurance better? is this solely about owning something new?

If only Google would permit this to work on Project Fi I would love to give it a try…
