Facebook Launches Its Dating Platform

Facebook announced its plans for getting into the dating game earlier this year. This week, the company is finally launching the new service, called Facebook Dating.

Facebook Dating is available in the United States starting today, as well as 19 other countries. Facebook Dating is available within the Facebook app, but our Dating profile is different from your actual Facebook profile. Facebook lets you highlight pictures from your Facebook profile on your dating profile, and you can also add pictures from your Instagram account.

By default, Facebook won’t show your dating profile to your friends and vice-versa, unless you add a friend to your Secret Crush list. This is an interesting feature Facebook has built to essentially allow you to date a Facebook friend or Instagram follower if they are interested in dating you, too. You can select up to 9 crushes from your Facebook friends and your Instagram followers to be part of your Secret Crush list, and if one of your crushes have you on their list, there’ll be a match and you two can get on with things.

Facebook says it’s also working on adding Facebook Stories and Instagram Stories to Facebook Dating in the future.

The service is launching in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Laos, Malaysia, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, the Philippines, Singapore, Suriname, Thailand, Uruguay, and Vietnam, along with the United States. It will be in Europe by early 2020.

Facebook Dating might be a success for the company since it’s integrated into the service itself. Facebook will probably still have to make sure to let users know that Facebook Dating is different from their actual Facebook profile, though. The company says it’s built Facebook Dating with privacy in mind, and it says none of your dating activity will be shared with anyone outside of Facebook Dating.

It has to be better at finding potential matches than every other service on the market.

This may turn out to be a winner for FB.
